In a remote region of Kenya, near Hell’s Gate National Park, a group of Bitcoin miners has found an innovative way to power their operations and bring electricity to rural homes.

They have set up shop at the site of an extinct volcano, utilising a mobile container equipped with solar power and energy from a nearby geothermal site. This unique setup allows them to mine Bitcoin while simultaneously electrifying local communities.

Gridless: Pioneering Bitcoin Mining with a Purpose

The venture is led by a startup called Gridless, backed by Jack Dorsey’s Block. Gridless operates six mines across Kenya, Malawi, and Zambia, all powered by a combination of renewable energy sources. Their CEO, Erik Hersman, emphasises the dual purpose of their operations, stating, “Most people think about bitcoin and the price of bitcoin… That doesn’t happen without the bitcoin miners and us being globally distributed.”

Renewable Energy and the Future of Bitcoin Mining

Bitcoin mining requires substantial electricity, and miners often seek the cheapest power sources. With the recent surge in Bitcoin’s value, there’s renewed interest in mining operations. Analysts predict a shift in the geography of crypto mining, with countries like Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East attracting miners due to lower energy costs.

Gridless aims to bridge the gap between power generation and capacity in Africa, where approximately 600 million people lack access to electricity. Their operations harness renewable energy sources and provide electricity to underserved communities. By leveraging the energy potential of volcanoes and geothermal power stations, Gridless is making renewable energy economically viable in Africa.

Empowering Communities with Renewable Energy for Sustainable Development

Gridless has not only powered thousands of households but also facilitated containerised cold storage for local farmers, charging stations for electric motorcycles, and public WiFi points. Through its mining operations, the company is empowering communities, unlocking trapped renewable power, and contributing to the secure functioning of the Bitcoin network.
