180 students on Sunday completed the Huawei DigiTruck digital skills training program at Kabimoi Vocational Training Centre in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County. This program is part of Huawei’s TECH4ALL initiative, which delivers free ICT training to underprivileged communities across Kenya using a mobile, solar-powered classroom.
Bridging the digital hap in rural Kenya
The Huawei DigiTruck program is designed to bring digital education directly to remote areas that lack traditional training infrastructure. Equipped with laptops, VR headsets, and Wi-Fi, the mobile classroom travels to counties like Baringo, providing essential cloud computing, coding, and digital literacy skills.
Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications & Digital Economy William Kabogo emphasized the program’s role in “bridging the digital divide and ensuring that no Kenyan is left behind as we journey toward a fully digitally enabled society.”
This training is crucial as Kenya’s youth, who comprise 70 percent of the population, must be empowered with ICT skills to thrive in the modern economy. Kabogo noted, “ICT drives economic growth. We must redouble our efforts to boost the number of youth in this sphere. By harnessing their skills and smart ideas, we will realize important progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a more prosperous world”.
Empowering youth with practical skills and Innovation
The four-week intensive course taught digital skills and paired participants with business development mentors. This support helps them market ideas online, develop startups, and apply their knowledge for entrepreneurial success. During the graduation, three students, Kibet Korir, Brian Kipchumba Kiprop, and Kirui Jerono Keithlyn, were recognized for their innovative projects addressing local challenges.
Kibet plans to launch a social media campaign and sensitization forums to combat drug and illicit brew addiction among youth. Kipchumba aims to collaborate with veterinarians to share animal health tips via digital platforms, reducing livestock losses. Jerono intends to promote online job platforms, teach digital skills, and support access to telemedicine services in her community.
The program has empowered over 6,200 youth across 39 counties, equipping them with the tools to succeed in Kenya’s digital economy. ICT Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui praised the initiative, stating, “As the DigiTruck moves nationwide, it bridges the digital divide, aligning with Kenya’s Vision 2030. We call for more initiatives to scale digital skills, empowering youth and communities for a tech-driven future”.
Key government officials, including MPs John Kiarie and Musa Sirma, attended the graduation ceremony, highlighting the national importance of digital inclusion efforts.
This program demonstrates how mobile ICT training can boost innovation and supply essential digital skills in areas where traditional schooling is limited, thereby transforming rural economies.
The Huawei DigiTruck’s success in Baringo is a powerful example of technology’s role in empowering Kenya’s youth and communities to build a digitally inclusive society.
