A partnership between two institutes of information technology, OpenLabs Ghana and AltSchool Africa, will train young people in Ghana in the development of digital content and provide them with employable skills.

By providing them with a variety of adaptable online digital learning tools, the collaboration will also appeal to women who are interested in the information technology sector and will help them grow their skill sets.

In accordance with the conditions of the contract, AltSchool would produce digital content on data science, product management, and software engineering and introduce students to online jobs throughout the world.

Mr Adewale Yusuf, the chief executive officer of AltSchool, and Dr Sujith Jayaprakash, the director of Openlabs Ghana, signed the contract on behalf of their respective companies at the OpenLabs campus in Accra.

Dr Jayaprakash claimed that the initiative would enhance students’ capacity to create digital learning solutions and have an impact on the technology sector in Africa and around the world.

He referred to the deal as “the start of the new future,” adding that “…this represents a shift to digital schooling.

Pupils will have access to digital content that will educate them as well as assist them in finding employment in the global labour market, he said.

According to Yusuf, Africa’s young population presents a chance for the continent to develop its human resource capability and change by embracing technology.

He raised concern about the educational practices used in African classrooms, claiming that the taught material did not give students the necessary skills to find employment.

Joana Ivy Abbiw, General Manager in Charge of Sales and Marketing at OpenLabs Ghana, urged women to pursue careers in the information technology industry and advance their knowledge of cutting-edge technologies.

“Most women think that IT is not for them because of our orientation, I think.’

Yet things are changing, and we can see that there are more women working in this field every day. Moving digital will enable women to take an IT programme in their own comfort zones without feeling intimidated,’’  she claimed.

A member of the World Bank Group, the International Financial Corporation (IFC), estimates that by 2030, 230 million jobs on the continent will require some level of digital skills.

This amounts to a market size of $130 billion and the possibility for 650 million training opportunities.
