Andela, a global network for remote technical talent, has recently announced the opening of the Andela Rwanda Apprenticeship Programme.

This is a 12-week programme that intends to introduce global organisations to the tremendous potential of up-and-coming Rwandese technical talent.

Companies have the opportunity to build their teams with graduate apprentices from the Andela Technical Leadership Programme (ATLP), which is made available to them through the apprenticeship programme.

Andela Rwanda’s flagship accelerator programme, the ATLP, is run in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology and Innovation of Rwanda. Its purpose is to provide the citizens of Rwanda with the foundational knowledge of software engineering that will enable them to become future leaders in the technology sector.

The Application Technology Leadership Programme (ATLP) is designed to provide participants with the experience of working within a team environment to develop web applications using best practices that are based on Javascript and its associated frameworks.

Over 70 percent of ATLP alumni are already engaged in engineering-related fields, and the programme has so far been successful in training a total of 380 junior engineers from across 10 different African countries. At the moment, there are an extra 150 students participating in the programme.

Apprentices in Andela’s software development programme have received extensive instruction on the PERN (PostgreSQL and MongoDB, Express, React, and Node) software stack. In addition to this, they have finished an immersive and hands-on learning process that provided them with the soft skills necessary to succeed as a professional in any remote engineering team.

The expectations

Andela apprentices will be entrusted with enhancing the performance of their teams in addition to adding business value to the organisations that “adopt” them as apprentices.

Organisations are encouraged to engage in the programme in order to boost the productivity of their teams, contribute to the expansion of technology on the African continent, and foster the development of technical talent on the continent. A stipend will be given directly to the apprentice by the organisations that employ them.

Mike B Ndimurukundo, Managing Director of Andela Rwanda said, “The Apprenticeship Program offers a unique opportunity for global organizations to tap into the vast potential of Rwandese tech talent and help shape the future of tech growth in Africa. By collaborating with Andela’s skilled and dedicated apprentices, companies not only enhance their teams’ performance but also contribute to the development of technical talent on the continent. Join us in empowering the next generation of African tech leaders.”

Andela Rwanda will provide support to organisations that are participating in the programme during the duration of the programme, which is three months. This support will include performance management through a robust and tight feedback loop between the Apprentice and an organisation’s team lead. This feedback loop will ensure that the apprentice is fully aware of all expectations and acts accordingly. In addition, there will be monthly technical seminars accessible, as well as coaching sessions that will help to upskill and increase the knowledge of their apprentices, making them a greater value to teams.

Organisations that are interested in taking part in this one-of-a-kind programme can get the additional information and register right here on this page.
