The Nairobi developer community gave a warm welcome to the industry-leading payment processor, BudPay, recently.

The purpose of the event was to bring together software developers who were interested in gaining opportunities to showcase their coding skills, learn about cutting-edge technology, and network with other developers. It was centred around the “FINTECHATHON” theme.

According to Wale Hassan, the Chief Executive Officer of BudPay, the objective was to foster inventiveness and originality among participants by providing them with access to the company’s technological infrastructure.

This will enable participants to construct applications that are capable of interacting with BudPay’s many goods and services.

The Payments theme was the central emphasis of the Fintechathon, and subthemes included Instant Payments, Money Transfers, Public Finances, E-commerce, Insurtech, and Fin-edutech.

The participants were divided up into teams, and each team presented a riveting pitch, showcasing their creativity as well as the potential of their innovations to disrupt a variety of industries. The judge, who was comprised of IT enthusiasts, industry experts, and seasoned professionals, evaluated the contestants based on how inventive and creative they were in their approach to solving a practical problem.

The “FINTECHATHON” cash prize of $1,000 USD was won by Simba Pay, which was designed by Mr Gaseema Ndung’u. LifeLine, which was headed by Mr. David Abolaji Ger, and Express Shoppers, which was led by Mr. Brian Keya finished second and third, winning $700 USD and $500 USD, respectively.

BudPay’s Impact on East Africa

During the prize presentation, Bassey Etimbuk, who is the Chief Operating Officer of BudPay, expressed his delight at each team’s idea and their commitment to making it a success.

He emphasized the fact that all winners have access to BudPay’s resources, which can assist them in the expansion of their businesses.

By hosting this event, BudPay has undoubtedly positively impacted the growth of the startup ecosystem in East Africa; therefore, my heartfelt congratulations go out to the company’s management team on this accomplishment.
