AWS (Amazon Web Services) has opened its first Amazon CloudFront edge point in Lagos, Nigeria.

This was made public through a press statement, which talked about the great value it brings.

With this new AWS edge location, users in Lagos can get all the benefits of Amazon CloudFront, a highly secure content delivery network (CDN) that speeds up the delivery of data, video, applications, and application programming interfaces (APIs) all over the world.

Amrote Abdella, the General Manager of AWS Sub-Saharan Africa, said, “Our customers, from startups to well-established commercial and public sector organizations, will benefit from faster content delivery and more security.”

The new Amazon CloudFront edge site makes it easier for businesses to start using the cloud. To meet the growing needs of our customers and speed up their digital changes, we invest in Nigeria, which is Africa’s leading technological hub.

This new edge location gives Amazon CloudFront customers in Nigeria better speed, network security, and application-level protection, as well as a reliable and fast connection to the AWS global network and AWS edge services like CloudFront, Shield, and WAF.

The new Edge site cuts delays by up to 30%, which means that applications for Nigerian customers will be faster and more responsive. Customers can set up security rules with the AWS Web Application Firewall (WAF) to protect their apps from web vulnerabilities and attacks from bots.

Education, media and entertainment, healthcare, financial services, and e-commerce companies will innovate faster with local AWS infrastructure in Nigeria.

“We look forward to AWS extending its global network footprint into Nigeria with the new Amazon CloudFront edge location, which we expect will help us enable an enhanced entertainment experience for millions of our customers in the region,” said Ibaka Entertainment CEO Idornigie Blessed.

AWS services, including Amazon S3, Elastic Load Balancing, and Amazon EC2, are application origins for Amazon CloudFront. Lambda@Edge supports customizing serverless code close to end users.

Africa’s AWS and CloudFront Edge facilities

Cloud computing leader AWS has the biggest global infrastructure. With the Amazon CloudFront edge location, AWS now has over 450 points of presence (POPs) and 13 regional edge caches in 90 towns in 50 countries, including Nigeria.

Nigeria is not the first African country to enter this contest. AWS has grown on the continent. With the Cape Town Development Centre, AWS entered Africa in 2004. This centre came up with new networking technologies, customer help software, and Amazon EC2.

AWS launched locations in Johannesburg in 2015 and Nigeria in 2022. AWS Direct Connect expanded to Cape Town and Johannesburg in 2017. Amazon CloudFront edge nodes opened in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa later. Nairobi’s additional edge opened in 2020.

AWS Africa (Cape Town) launched with three availability zones in 2020. Lagos opened the first AWS local zones in January 2023. This update makes ultra-low-latency distributed edge and hybrid cloud programmes easier to provide, especially to Nigerian end users.

AWS’s major investments in Africa demonstrate its commitment to providing businesses and residents with cutting-edge cloud computing. It becomes a trustworthy digital transformation partner.
