Airtel Rwanda, a leading mobile network operator, has taken a groundbreaking step in advancing the digital landscape of the country by becoming the first to launch 4G LTE mobile internet services.

The much-awaited 4G internet was unveiled in Kigali recently, with the aim of making affordable and reliable internet accessible to more Rwandans, especially in rural areas.

Responding to the citizens’ concerns about internet affordability and reliability, Emmanuel Hamez, the CEO of Airtel Rwanda, announced that the new 4G internet service would be offered at a price twice cheaper than the current market price for internet services. The ambitious target is to achieve a coverage of 99% of the country, ensuring a vast majority of Rwandans have access to high-speed connectivity.

The transition from the existing 3G network to the new 4G LTE is designed to be user-friendly and simple. Customers need not worry about manually configuring their devices, as the new 4G settings will be automatically installed on their phones. By dialling *255#, Airtel Internet users can seamlessly upgrade from 3G to 4G without any additional cost, allowing them to experience the benefits of the Ubuntu 4G pack.

Empowering Customers with Enhanced 4G Services

The popular “Ubuntu” packs, introduced in 2022, which include free minutes, SMS, and data, will now be enhanced with 4G services. Customers will be able to enjoy streaming live, high-definition content, playing real-time video games, and experiencing reduced buffering during video calls and virtual meetings. The 4G-enabled sim cards will be provided to Airtel customers for free, further encouraging the adoption of this advanced technology.

Emphasizing its mission to provide an ultra-fast and ultra-reliable network for homes and businesses, Airtel Rwanda aims to drive greater digital inclusivity across the nation. The CEO, Emmanuel Hamez, expressed the company’s commitment to becoming the top choice for internet and data services in Rwanda following their successful launch of 4G.

In line with their new ways of doing business and targeting the youth market, Airtel Rwanda has announced rebranding plans and a mass media outreach campaign. The theme “A Reason to Imagine” embodies their vision for innovation and transformative digital experiences.

Extending Coverage and Focus on Mobile Payments

Airtel Rwanda’s 2G and 3G networks currently cover 94% of the population, and they are actively working with regulators and the Ministry of ICT to expand coverage to 99% by the end of the year. This expansion aims to bring the benefits of digital connectivity to even the most remote regions of the country.

Additionally, with a network of over 10,000 agents (merchants), Airtel Rwanda plans to increase access to mobile payment services, which are available cost-free in Rwanda, further promoting financial inclusion and convenience for the population.

As Airtel Rwanda pioneers the 4G LTE era in the country, it is poised to make a significant impact on the digital economy, bridging the connectivity gap and empowering citizens with enhanced digital experiences. With its rebranding efforts and commitment to expanding coverage, Airtel Rwanda is well on its way to becoming the preferred choice for internet and data services, driving Rwanda’s digital transformation and progress towards a more connected future.
