The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has raised alarm concerning a fake LinkedIn account that is posing as the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, who is a Professor of Engineering.

The Commission stated that it was apparent that the account had been created by some shady and criminal elements with the intention of defrauding naïve members of the public and users of social media who may believe that such an account belongs to the EVC of NCC.

The NCC has stated, “for the avoidance of doubt,” that the Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, does not have a LinkedIn account.

Statement from Director of Public Affairs

The account was definitely made by some shady and criminal elements with the intention of scamming members of the public and users of social media who are naive enough to believe that such an account belongs to the EVC of the NCC.

Further warnings

“For the avoidance of doubt, the EVC/CEO of NCC, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, has no LinkedIn Account. Therefore, any such account found on social media or any other platform, purporting to belong to the EVC of NCC, is fake!

“We are working with appropriate security agencies to investigate the source of this fraudulent act with a view to nipping it to the bud.

“We urge members of the public, and our esteemed stakeholders to be cautious, and vigilant, while on social media platforms, or in the cyberspace as many of these fraudulent individuals and groups abound, looking for unsuspecting users to defraud.

“The Commission has a presence on the Internet with the official website (www.ncc.gov.ng), and key social media platforms. All information about our activities, programmes and reports are verifiable on our website and on our verified social media handles.

“We also encourage everyone to follow our official social media accounts for credible updates and announcements,” the statement added.

When accessing or using material obtained from social media, members of the general public are urged to exercise caution and adhere to carefully crafted guidelines.

About NCC

On November 24, 1992, the Federal Military Government of Nigeria issued Decree number 75, which subsequently led to the establishment of the NCC. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) was given the role of regulating the provision of telecommunications services and facilities, promoting competition, and establishing performance standards for the country of Nigeria’s telephone services. The Nigerian Communications Commission is also abbreviated as NCC. Its organisational structure is comprised of twenty two (22) departments.

The NCC is responsible for ensuring that there is promotion of fair competition in the industry of communications, as well as protection of providers of communications services and facilities from the misuse of market power as well as anti-competitive and unfair practises by other services or facility providers or equipment suppliers.
