Germany has introduced the cutting-edge Circulary digital platform as a response to the rising problems associated with urban growth and the management of garbage in Lagos. This platform was developed to digitally collect, monitor, and process garbage from the surrounding areas.

Circulary is going to bring about a paradigm shift in the way that waste management is handled in Lagos, and it has the backing of the German federal ministry responsible for the environment, nature conservation, nuclear safety, and consumer protection (BMUV), as well as the Chambers for GreenTech (DIHK Service GmbH). In addition to this, it seeks to strengthen the interaction between businesses in Nigeria and Germany.

The objective of Circulary

The establishment of a circular economy, as well as the promotion of sustainable growth throughout the waste value chain, are the key goals of the platform. This online marketplace is well positioned to revolutionise the way waste management is approached in Lagos.

Timo Pleyer, the Delegate of German Industry and Commerce in Nigeria, shed attention on the several obstacles that the city of Lagos has, such as its high population density, limited infrastructure, concerns with transport, accessibility of energy, water distribution, and waste management.

Even while Lagos generates millions of tonnes of domestic waste each year, only around 30 percent of that material is collected and handled in an effective manner. Pleyer and his team conducted an in-depth analysis of the waste management industry in Lagos since they were aware of the seriousness of the situation. The results of this research lay the framework for the Circulary digital marketplace, a cutting-edge platform with the goal of integrating and optimising the whole regional waste value chain.

Circulary is distinguished by a number of one-of-a-kind features, including informative centres, algorithmic matchmaking, and a marketplace for recyclable materials modelled after eBay. These characteristics are intended to encourage the development of a local open market for recyclable items and recyclates that cover a wide range of sorts of trash.

In addition to this, the platform intends to promote the establishment of business partnerships, make it easier to purchase technology and products manufactured in Germany, highlight prospects for market penetration and expansion in both Nigeria and Germany and provide information that can be relied on in order to attract sector investments.

More details

The sight of heaps of decaying garbage in practically every nook and cranny of the city has become routine. On the other hand, Germany is hopeful that the introduction of the technology will contribute to the improvement of waste management in the state.

Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Lagos, Weert Borner, stressed the German government’s commitment to encouraging sustainable and environmentally friendly business practices in partnership with Nigeria. This commitment was made clear by the German government.

The General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, recently voiced excitement over the thriving economy and dynamic ecosystem of Lagos, both of which create exciting market potential for environmentally responsible waste management solutions. She brought attention to the fact that the circular economy is gaining momentum in Nigeria as a result of the government’s efforts to foster sustainable development and develop market opportunities.

By encouraging recycling, reuse, and regeneration, a circular economy seeks to achieve its primary goal of producing as little waste as possible while simultaneously increasing the value of its resources. This strategy is consistent with the creation of jobs and the shift to renewable energy sources, which together contribute to a more sustainable future for Lagos and for Nigeria as a whole.

Olugbenga Adebola, the National President of the Association of garbage Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN), praised the Circulary platform for its ability to bring exposure and encourage more efficient and effective garbage collection. Circulary was developed by the Circulary Foundation. Waste segregation has the potential to become a reality thanks to the capabilities of the platform, which will further improve the long-term viability of waste management in Lagos and its impact on the environment.
