Apple showed off iOS 17, the iPhone 15 series, the Apple Watch Series 9, and the second-generation Apple Watch Ultra at its Wanderlust event. iOS 17, a long-awaited update for the iPhone, came out the other day with new and better protection features.

With the software update, you can use Voicemail and FaceTime, among other things. Cyberattacks and malware are more likely to hurt journalists, activists, and people who fight for human rights, so many of the new features protect them. Anti-web tracking, storing passwords, and giving out a new passkey resistant to scams are all good for the general public.

The first version of software often has bugs. Since Apple released an early version of iOS 17 to the public, many of the biggest problems have probably been fixed. Ordinary people can update right away without risk.

Even if you’re not ready to move to iOS 17, every iPhone user should install Apple’s latest security update. How to do it. The software can now be used on phones that meet the standards, but you shouldn’t upgrade yours just yet.

We’ll look at several reasons why you may not update to iOS 17 yet and let others try it. How do you update your iPhone?

How to update iOS on your iPhone

Before loading a new OS, you should always back up your phone. You can back up your phone with the Finder app or iCloud. Save your most important things, like photos, in another place.

Install iOS 17 via Settings → General → Software Update. It works best on a WiFi network, charged and plugged in. After downloading the update, the device will restart, so choose when you won’t need your iPhone.

After restarting, test the new features.

Not every iPhone running iOS 17 will get all the new capabilities, notably older devices like the iPhone XR and iPhone 11. The following iOS 17 features aren’t available on all devices:

FaceTime hand reactions: iPhone 12+.

FaceTime on Apple TV: iPhone XS/XR+.

Better autocorrect: iPhone 12+.

Predictions inline as you type: iPhone 12 and later.

Why you could install iOS 17 on iPhone

In iOS 17, phones, Messages, and FaceTime get significant improvements that allow you to express yourself. Standing by gives the iPhone a new full-screen experience with glanceable information for distant viewing when charged on its side.

The voicemail screen now shows a near-real-time transcription of the caller’s speech to help you decide to answer. You used to listen to your answering machine “screen” callers before caller ID.

AirDrop simplifies sharing and adds NameDrop for contact sharing. Typing is faster and easier with keyboard improvements. iOS 17 improves Widgets, Safari, Music, AirPlay, etc.

Safari eliminates site address tracking that might pinpoint your device and track you online. Sites and advertisers find it tougher to monitor your visits.

This OS update fixes device-specific security issues. Look for your device. The update generally lets you choose which photos to share in-app and which to keep private. An app can add an event to your calendar without seeing your others.

The improved Lockdown Mode protects you from more sophisticated cyberattacks. Now, even your Apple Watch can use it. This feature was timely, as recent weaknesses allowed spyware to infect Apple Watches.

Why you may not update immediately

FaceTime messaging, live voicemail transcription, and Standby Mode are popular, but there are reasons not to change immediately.

A cause to pause the download? The upgrade may also drain your battery faster. This could be because your smartphone is indexing data in the background to support iOS 17’s new capabilities. While updating the iPhone, the battery often drains in the first few days.

If your battery health is poor (Settings > Battery > Battery Health), wait before upgrading to iOS 17.

Another is storage. Remember that the file will take up a few gigabytes if your device is small. Although you have ample room to load it, it may slow down your iPhone.

Even if your iPhone can run iOS 17, that doesn’t guarantee the new operating system will perform well. Due to its lower storage, RAM, or CPU, the iPhone XS or iPhone 11 Pro may struggle to support iOS 17.

Lastly, a program update will always have a few bugs, no matter how polished it looks. Apple often issues a “point update” after a significant upgrade to solve issues like:

Battery drain.

Lag.

Apps closing forcefully.

Restarting the phone.

Unusable features.

Many should update to iOS 17, but some may delay or refuse. As well as AirDrop for contacts, live voicemail transcription, StandBy mode that turns your phone into an intelligent bedroom clock, and a new Siri interface, iOS 17 offers the latest security precautions.
