In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, access to the Internet has become a fundamental aspect of modern life.

Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, recently emphasized the importance of open and secure Internet access for African countries.

Speaking at the Africa Internet Governance Forum in Abuja, Dr. Tijani outlined his vision for bridging the digital divide and fostering innovation across the continent. This article explores his insights, highlighting the need for collaboration and secure Internet ecosystems in Africa.

Dr. Tijani’s address at the Africa Internet Governance Forum underscored the significance of open and secure Internet access. He argued that making the Internet accessible to all is crucial for narrowing the digital divide and unlocking innovative opportunities within Africa. The Minister emphasized that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is dedicated to fostering international collaborations and dialogues to achieve these objectives.

Nigeria’s Leadership Role

As the largest telecommunications market in Africa, Nigeria plays a pivotal role in shaping the continent’s digital future. Dr. Tijani stressed that Nigeria is well-aware of the evolving dynamics of Internet technologies and is committed to working with other African nations to ensure effective Internet governance. The aim is to leverage the Internet’s vast resources for the benefit of citizens and the nation’s overall growth.

Dr. Tijani emphasized the necessity of collaboration among African countries to drive collective economic development. He stated, “The need for our consistent collaboration to develop our economy collectively is preeminent in the agenda of the current administration in Nigeria.” This collaboration is seen as a means to bridge digital divides, enhance cybersecurity, safeguard digital rights, and foster innovation.

The Minister encouraged all stakeholders to prioritize a collaborative approach in crafting policies and strategies that will shape Africa’s Internet future. He stressed the importance of creating a future Internet landscape that reflects Africa’s shared values, aspirations, and diversity.

Dr. Tijani took a moment to commend the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and other agencies that formed the Local Organizing Committee (LOG) for their efforts in hosting the 2023 Africa Internet Governance Forum. The successful execution of this event highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to fostering a dynamic digital ecosystem.

NCC’s Commitment to a Secure Internet

During the opening and closing ceremonies of the event, Prof. Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, shed light on NCC’s commitment to ensuring a secure Internet ecosystem in Nigeria. He noted that Nigeria has achieved significant growth in broadband penetration, basic Internet usage, and voice subscriptions, contributing impressively to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Prof. Danbatta also emphasized the importance of sharing experiences with sister nations in Africa and learning from AfIGF parliamentarians to promote socio-economic development through proper Internet resource utilization.

Honourable Samuel George of Ghana, the Secretary of the African Parliamentary Network on Internet Governance, echoed the call for a free Internet that is inclusive, safe, and secure for all African citizens. He stressed that achieving this goal requires collaborative efforts to create an enabling environment, enact supportive laws, and provide digital infrastructure for young innovators. Such initiatives will promote indigenous and local content development in technological advancements, thereby making Africa more self-sufficient.

The 2023 Africa Internet Governance Forum, themed “Transforming Africa’s Digital Landscape: Empowering Inclusion, Security, and Innovation,” held at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, offered a crucial platform for African countries to discuss pressing issues. Dr. Bosun Tijani’s vision for an open and secure Internet, along with the commitment of organizations like NCC and the advocacy of leaders like Honourable Samuel George, paves the way for a more inclusive, secure, and innovative digital economy in Africa. It is through collaborative efforts that the continent can harness the full potential of the Internet and bridge the digital divide.
