The Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority (SEWA), in collaboration with the Sharjah Hamriyah Independent Power Company (SHIPCO) and GE Vernova, has announced the commencement of commercial operations at the Hamriyah Independent Power Plant (IPP).

This state-of-the-art combined cycle facility is recognized as the most efficient gas power plant currently operating in the Middle East and Africa (MEA), making a significant contribution to reducing the carbon intensity of power generation in Sharjah.

The Hamriyah IPP is powered by three GE Vernova 9HA.01 turbines, which offer substantially higher efficiency compared to previous power generation assets in the region. This efficiency improvement is anticipated to allow SEWA to generate an additional 1.8 gigawatts (GW) of power while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by up to 4 million tons per year. This reduction is equivalent to taking approximately one million cars off the roads in the UAE.

GE Vernova’s Integral Role

The project was completed with the support of GE Vernova’s Gas Power business, which provided turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services. This included the installation of three 9HA.01 gas turbines powering three H84 generators, three STF-D650 steam turbines powering three A74 generators, and three heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) for the facility. GE Vernova is also set to provide parts, repairs, and maintenance services for the power generation assets at the site for a period of around 25 years.

A Commitment to Sustainability and Growth

His Excellency Saeed Sultan Al Suwaidi, Chairman of SEWA, emphasized their commitment to meeting the growing energy needs in Sharjah with reliable, affordable, and sustainable power. The Hamriyah IPP plays a crucial role in SEWA’s 2030 Roadmap and their strategy to enhance the grid with lower carbon power. The project is expected to meet up to 40% of Sharjah’s electricity requirements, contributing significantly to the region’s energy security.

Omar Almulla, Chairman of SHIPCO, highlighted the significance of the milestone at the Hamriyah IPP. This accomplishment was the result of over 11 million hours of work by more than 1,500 people from over 20 countries, representing SEWA, SHIPCO, GE Vernova, and other stakeholders. The project reflects a collective commitment to increasing power capacity in the UAE while reducing the carbon intensity of electricity generation to tackle global climate challenges.

Innovative Energy Solutions

GE Vernova’s H-class gas turbine technology has set records for combined cycle efficiency, with over 140 units ordered to date and more than 1.8 million operating hours. The technology offers flexibility to quickly adjust power output, aiding in grid stabilization as variable renewable energy sources become more prominent. It also has the capability to burn up to 50% hydrogen when blended with natural gas, with future plans aiming for up to 100% hydrogen use. Additionally, a combined cycle configuration with a post-combustion capture system is in development to potentially reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 90%.

Joseph Anis, President & CEO Europe, Middle East & Africa at GE Vernova’s Gas Power business, described the Hamriyah IPP project as unique in many ways. He emphasized that the successful operation of all three blocks was a testament to the strength of SEWA’s vision and the dedicated efforts of everyone involved, including a global workforce that overcame challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project’s innovative financing structure, collaborative development, and international workforce highlight its significance as a milestone in sustainable energy generation.

An Essential Role in the Energy Transition

The Hamriyah IPP project aligns with the UAE’s efforts to transition to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. By delivering sustainable and highly efficient power generation, the facility contributes to the region’s economic growth and environmental goals. The collaboration between SEWA, SHIPCO, and GE Vernova demonstrates the vital role the private sector and technological innovation play in advancing sustainable energy solutions.

GE Vernova has been a key player in supporting the development of the energy sector in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) for over 80 years. Its investments in the UAE, including the Jebel Ali Service Center in Dubai, have provided advanced maintenance, testing, and repair solutions for generators and gas turbines, serving customers from more than 80 countries.

A Brighter and Greener Future

The Hamriyah IPP represents a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future for the UAE and the MEA region. The project showcases the power of collaboration, innovation, and cutting-edge technology in advancing the energy transition and creating a brighter, more sustainable world.
