The National Library of Nigeria (NLN) has unveiled an AI-powered e-library platform called ‘Boldscholar’ to address issues related to pirated works of Nigerian authors and enhance access to their books.

The platform aims to leverage technology to improve the visibility of Nigerian authors and provide economic benefits to writers and publishers.

A Solution for Nigerian Authors

The unveiling of ‘Boldscholar’ is part of the NLN’s efforts to move from traditional resource deposit methods to online formats, making it easier for Nigerians to access electronic resources. This transition will help ensure that authors and publishers receive fair compensation for their work while making these resources more widely available to the public.

Nigeria is known for its prolific writers, with a significant number of books published annually. To address the challenge of accessing these resources, ‘Boldscholar’ was developed to collect, process, and preserve electronic resources published by Nigerian authors. This new platform seeks to increase the visibility of Nigerian literature while promoting economic benefits for authors and publishers.

Affordable Access and Anti-Piracy Measures

The ‘Boldscholar’ platform allows users to access its content for a nominal fee, making it an affordable option for readers. In addition to offering affordable access, ‘Boldscholar’ is designed to curb piracy, ensuring that authors receive compensation for their work and that their books are made readily available to readers.

Chukwuemeka Godswill, the Consultant and developer of ‘Boldscholar,’ emphasized the importance of creating online visibility for books by Nigerian authors. The platform will make it easier for scholars, students, and readers to access these works, ensuring that they reach a local and international audience. The platform is built to allow authors’ work to be translated into 40 languages, making it accessible to a global readership.

Collaboration with International and Local Partners

‘Boldscholar’ is the result of a partnership between the National Library of Nigeria and Boldscholar, and it has been developed to empower authors, publishers, and the broader public. By bringing together local and international partners, the platform aims to revolutionize the way Nigerian literature is accessed and read.

The Nigerian Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, highlighted the significance of literary works in preserving the culture of Nigerian society and addressing societal issues such as corruption, gender equality, and social justice. Literature has played a pivotal role in emancipating people’s thinking, stimulating enthusiasm, and inspiring national consciousness.

Writers in Nigeria have been at the forefront of encouraging people of all ethnicities to march toward a future full of vigor and vitality. Nigerian authors have scored considerable achievements and have contributed to national progress through their literary works.

Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA)

The President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Mr. Camillus Ukah, noted the association’s emphasis on promoting literature in schools and communities across Nigeria. ANA has partnered with educational institutions, libraries, and government agencies to cultivate a love for reading and writing among the youth. The association has also made efforts to amplify the voices of talented authors and inspire the next generation of storytellers.

ANA’s achievements include the revival of the Mbari Series, a monthly discussion program that provides a platform for established and aspiring writers to learn, grow, connect, and bond with mentors. Recognizing the role of creativity in shaping the nation’s future, ANA has empowered young minds to find their voices, embrace their identities, and contribute to Nigeria’s rich literary tapestry.

The launch of ‘Boldscholar’ represents a significant step forward in advancing literature in Nigeria. By providing affordable access to literary works while addressing piracy, the platform offers a promising solution to the challenges faced by authors and readers alike. It is expected to promote Nigerian literature, empower authors, and make a wide range of books more accessible to the public.
