Nigeria’s Port Terminal Multipurpose Limited (PTML) is on the verge of making maritime history as it anticipates the arrival of the largest Container-RORO (CONRO) ship ever to visit West Africa on November 27.

The forthcoming arrival of the ultramodern mega Container-RORO ship, MV GREAT LAGOS, owned by the Grimaldi Group, is poised to redefine the region’s maritime landscape.

Innovation and Sustainability in Motion

Launched in April this year, MV GREAT LAGOS is a marvel of modern engineering and environmental consciousness. With a length of 250 meters, a beam of 38 meters, and a deadweight of over 45,000 tonnes, the vessel showcases cutting-edge technology. It has the capacity to transport 4.7 kilometers of rolling freight, 2,500 Car Equivalent Units (CEUs), and 2,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). This mega ship is the second in the G5-class of vessels recently introduced by the Grimaldi Group.

PTML Managing Director, Mr. Ascanio Russo, expressed that “the vessel sets a new benchmark in the shipping industry.” The innovative features and environmental consciousness of MV GREAT LAGOS position it as a game-changer in the maritime sector.

The forthcoming visit of MV GREAT LAGOS to Lagos is not merely a routine port call; it symbolizes a landmark event for Nigeria’s maritime sector and for PTML. Russo commended the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) for its support in facilitating the reception of the vessel.

The arrival of MV GREAT LAGOS at PTML is a testament to the terminal’s advanced capabilities and its readiness to handle the new generation of mega-vessels. Russo emphasized that PTML’s strategic location at the Tin-Can Island Port Complex in Lagos, coupled with advanced technology and infrastructure, positions it as a pivotal gateway for trade in West Africa.

Eco-Friendly Maritime Transport

What sets MV GREAT LAGOS apart is its compliance with the highest environmental standards. In an era where environmental sustainability is both a preference and a necessity, the vessel leads the way in eco-friendly maritime transport. Its advanced design and technology significantly reduce environmental impact, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and protect marine ecosystems.

To receive MV GREAT LAGOS, PTML has invested over $20 million to extend its Berth 11. This strategic investment includes deeper berths, expanded storage areas, and state-of-the-art cargo handling equipment. This transformation positions PTML as one of the most advanced logistics terminals in West Africa, capable of handling diverse cargo types, including bulk, break-bulk, containerized, and Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) cargoes.

Seamless Integration of Vessels and Terminal Activities

The seamless integration of vessels and terminal activities at PTML underscores Nigeria’s dedication to advancing its maritime infrastructure while prioritizing environmental responsibility. The terminal’s array of facilities, including deep-water berths, extensive storage areas, and advanced cargo-handling equipment, streamlines the logistics process, reinforcing PTML’s role as a key player in the global shipping industry.

The forthcoming arrival of MV GREAT LAGOS signifies not only a historic maritime event but also a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and advancing Nigeria’s prominence in global trade. As the mega vessel docks at PTML, it stands as a symbol of Nigeria’s capability to handle vessels of such magnitude, positioning the country as a key player in the ever-evolving global shipping industry. The investment in cutting-edge infrastructure and environmentally conscious practices further highlights Nigeria’s dedication to leading the way in the maritime sector.
