Using AI and health expertise, a strategic multinational alliance is boosting Kenya’s healthcare sector.

During a groundbreaking roundtable discussion on “Technology-enabled Health Systems Strengthening” on February 22, 2024, top healthcare figures from the Kenyan government, donor organisations, and the private sector pledged to improve critical health outcomes.

Kenya’s healthcare system struggles with limited resources, finances, workforce, rising expenses, poor insurance penetration, and changing health issues. Despite reductions in HIV prevalence and AIDS-related mortality, new infections in critical populations remain a priority. Kenya has a high TB rate.

Vantage Health Technologies, a division of BroadReach Group, has teamed with Africa Health Business (AHB), a healthcare consultancy, to deliver advanced training to handle these complicated issues. This programme uses AI, data analytics, and medical advances.

Partnership objectives:

Technology for Change: Prioritise AI and technology as healthcare solutions.

Universal health coverage (UHC): Accelerate Kenya’s UHC ambitions and ensure quality treatment for all.

Sustainable Partnerships: Build lasting partnerships to scale up these efforts within Kenya and other countries facing similar needs.

In healthcare, the government is vital in creating an environment for technology and AI. “We welcome innovative ideas that can be refined,” said Bernard Langat, Division Head, Directorate of Health Informatics, Ministry of Health.

Kenya Healthcare Federation Chair Dr. Gakombe Kanyenje Karangaita said, “Universal Health Coverage is unachievable without cohesion.” The more robust system will require AI to improve provider and payer connectivity.

Community-Driven, Holistic

The partnership’s community participation is crucial. Health education, technology integration, skill development, and community involvement will create a patient-centred, accessible, and resilient health system in Kenya.

We must adopt an ecology approach. To strengthen Africa’s healthcare system, we need African-led solutions, said AHB Executive Chairman Dr. Amit Thakker.

According to Vantage Health Technologies Managing Director Paul Bhuhi, “By combining AI with healthcare expertise, we can create tangible progress towards Universal Health Coverage in Kenya.”

Kenya’s collaborative, technology-focused effort shows its leadership in healthcare innovation in Africa. AI could transform Kenya’s healthcare and inspire other nations.

Why Kenya Improves Health Systems with AI

Kenya is transforming its healthcare system with AI. This ambitious project is driven by AI’s ability to solve critical problems and enhance Kenyan health.

AI is used for early diagnosis, disease prevention, and efficient treatment. AI can also anticipate outbreaks, identify patterns, and optimise resource allocation from massive medical data.

This technology may overcome the lack of healthcare personnel in remote areas. AI-powered technologies can help healthcare personnel make preliminary diagnoses and improve community care.

AI-driven healthcare in Kenya is a significant step towards a more robust and equitable system. The project could inspire other African nations to use technology to enhance healthcare access and quality.
