The Federal Minister of Communications Innovation, and Digital Economy in Nigeria, Dr Bosun Tijani has said that the government is looking into whether participants in the 3 Million Technical Training (3MTT) programme could get jobless benefits.

While announcing the choice of 270,000 fellows for the second batch of the programme, Tijani made the statements.

The Minister said President Bola Tinubu, who cares a lot about the program, recommended that members get unemployment benefits.

“The programme was created using the President’s plan to create 2 million digital jobs,” he said,

Building tech workforce

The Minister said, “The President has been obvious; he has asked that we also look at the possibility of providing unemployment benefits to those who qualify within this programme.” The country is building the emerging talent for the workforce the world needs to power technology.”

“We want to support our people as we establish these possibilities to give them the skills they need to engage in the global digital economy.”

“We recognise that empowering them would increase our ability to defend our GDP as a country, defend the complexity of our economy, and promote the growth we want in our beloved country.”

Job placements for others

Tijani also said that many friends from the first group of students are now working as interns nationwide.

He also said that all of the fellows from the first phase will now participate in hackathons in their states to put what they’ve learned into practice. They will work with their peers to create solutions that show off their skills.

“As we continue to work together, we ensure that partners can help those who want to become entrepreneurs get their small businesses off the ground and start their technology startups. Hopefully, they will help us find technological solutions to many of the problems we face in the country,” the Minister said.

Choosing the second cohort

The Minister said 270,000 young and old Nigerians were selected as fellows for the second cohort, up 10% from the initial 30,000. The programme aims to train 3 million Nigerians, and the Minister reported 1.8 million applications.

“For all those selected, welcome on board! Check your emails and #3MTT dashboards for future steps.

He added, “For those who have not yet been selected as fellows, remember that you are part of the 3MTT Learning Community and will have access to resources to continue your learning journey.”
