In a move that signals a significant shift in the global small satellite Earth observation industry, South Africa’s Simera Sense has secured a substantial €13.5 million ($14.75 million) investment to supercharge its production capabilities and technological advancements.

Simera Sense, known for its comprehensive optical payload solutions, is not just expanding its production footprint but is also pioneering on-board data processing technology for camera control electronics. This innovation aims to resolve the bandwidth and communication challenges inherent in ground-based data processing from satellite cameras, heralding a new era of efficiency and capability in satellite imagery.

Expanding Beyond Borders

Simera Sense will be able to establish additional production facilities in Europe as a result of the investment, which could potentially quadruple its production capacity. This strategic move is designed to cater to the burgeoning demand for high-resolution satellite imagery and to solidify Simera Sense’s position as a leader in the market.

Despite its global ambitions, Simera Sense remains committed to its South African origins, with its main production facility continuing to operate in the country. This balance of local dedication and international expansion reflects the company’s ethos of global reach with a local touch.

Since its inception in 2018, Simera Sense has been on an upward trajectory. The recent funding is set to accelerate the company’s growth further, enabling it to enhance its product offerings, reduce delivery times, and advance its on-board processing solutions.

A Visionary Leadership

Under the visionary leadership of founders Johann du Toit and Charles Black, Simera Sense has supplied a diverse range of high-resolution cameras to various industries worldwide. The company’s active presence in Europe, collaborating with key stakeholders like AAC Clyde Space, Open Cosmos, OHB Systems, and the European Space Agency, underscores its commitment to being at the forefront of the industry.

“Satellite imagery plays a pivotal role in addressing Earth’s challenges, and the vibrancy of the Earth observation market mirrors this importance,” says Johann du Toit, CEO of Simera Sense. With plans to ramp up production to 200 payloads per year and double its development team, Simera Sense is poised to redefine the standards of the Earth observation industry.

Simera Sense’s latest funding round is more than just a financial boost—it’s a testament to the company’s innovative spirit and its commitment to shaping the future of Earth observation. As Simera Sense embarks on this new chapter, the industry watches with anticipation, eager to see how this trailblazer will continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

How Simera Sense technology works

Simera Sense’s technology focuses on developing high-resolution optical payloads for tiny satellites intended for Earth observation. Their payloads are designed to be lightweight, strong, and simple to install on nanosatellites in order to provide detailed imagery with minimal expense and labour.

Products from the firm, such as the xScape series, can take pictures from a 500-km orbit with different degrees of ground sample distance (GSD). For instance, the xScape50 and xScape200 can produce imagery with less than 30m GSD and 1.5m GSD, respectively, offering high-resolution images appropriate for a variety of applications.

The creation of on-board data processing for camera control circuits is a fundamental component of Simera Sense’s technology. The goal of this invention is to overcome the communication and bandwidth constraints that arise from processing satellite camera data on the ground. Simera Sense’s technology can improve the efficiency of satellite operations by processing data directly on the satellite, reducing the quantity of data that needs to be relayed to Earth.

Their strategy for streamlining Earth observation incorporates both hardware and interaction with mission providers, allowing them to minimise development risks, shorten time to market, and concentrate on their core competencies. What distinguishes Simera Sense in the small satellite Earth observation market is their all-encompassing payload solutions strategy.
