DeepMind, Google’s AI-focused company, announced SIMA, its new “instructable game-playing AI agent.” The research part for SIMA, which stands for Scalable, Instructable, Multiworld Agent, continues. It is being taught many different gaming skills, so it can do more than just kill people in StarCraft II.

SIMA is working with Hello Games, Embracer, Tuxedo Labs, Coffee Stain, and other game makers to learn how games work and how to use what it learns on games it hasn’t seen before. Along with moving the field of natural language AI models forward, DeepMind wants SIMA to become a loyal party guest who does what it’s told and doesn’t steal all the suitable products.

IS SIMA a good idea?

“SIMA isn’t trained to win a game; it’s trained to run it and do what it’s told,” co-lead of SIMA and researcher at Google DeepMind Tim Harley reportedly stated.

SIMA researchers have concentrated on open-world games rather than linear or story-driven ones to teach the agent to follow commands. SIMA was trained by seeing pairs of humans play a game where one watched and gave instructions while the other did them. Another scenario saw people playing freely while DeepMind researchers recorded instructions that would have led to their actions.

This sounds appealing. Being risky in an online co-op game that drops randoms is well known. They may spoil your game through incompetence or toxicity.

An AI party member who follows orders means you won’t have to worry about your back or money. Want to avoid hours of resource gathering? Let SIMA do it while you focus on other duties.

As attractive as this may sound, training AI models on human behaviour, especially online human interaction, has gone before.

The problem isn’t as prominent in a controlled study environment, but if SIMA is trained on ordinary human-based internet gameplay, griefing will start soon.

About SIMA Al

Google’s ‘SIMA’ AI will revolutionise gaming. SIMA, the ideal co-op gaming buddy, adjusts to players’ strategies and challenges them to improve. SIMA replaces static NPC allies with real-time analysis to improve gaming.

SIMA’s capabilities are as varied as the games it supports, from tactical support in shooters to multiplayer strategy. Beyond its game skills, SIMA wants to engage with users by having genuine conversations and becoming a virtual buddy.

SIMA claims to improve gameplay and change how we interact with AI in games with superior voice recognition and adaptive learning. SIMA, your AI co-op gaming partner, will lead you on thrilling virtual excursions.
