During a recent earnings call, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company’s social networking app Threads has more than 150 million active users per month.

From 130 million users in February to 100 million in October, Threads has seen a commendable rise, as shown here. With any luck, Threads will continue to expand unfettered and become Meta’s following billion-user social network, according to Zuckerberg.

Many users have been seeking out alternative platforms due to their increasing dissatisfaction with X under Musk’s leadership, which is likely the cause of this user surge. Threads is taking advantage of this trend, along with Bluesky and other contenders.

The growth of Threads

Meta has continuously improved the app since its launch in July 2023, adding features such as a web app, keyword search, trending topics, an edit button, voice posts, and support for multiple accounts.

Another Meta-owned app that probably helped grow Threads’ user base was Instagram, where ads for the app appeared. To promote her most recent album, pop sensation Taylor Swift has joined Threads.

March saw Meta make some progress towards interoperability. Through the ActivityPub protocol, users in certain countries, such as the US, Canada, and Japan, can now share content to the fediverse, a network of decentralised social networks similar to Mastodon.

To facilitate communication with users outside of the Threads platform and, maybe, the transfer of content to other services in the future, Meta has introduced a new feature that targets users above 18 with public profiles.

To further expand functionality, Meta is currently testing an API for Threads that is expected to be released to the public by June. With this API, brands, developers, and creators can streamline their Threads presence management, create engaging experiences, and share new content with their communities.

The application programming interface (API) allows developers to access, post-publish, and authenticate content. Further features, such as post-metric insights and real-time notifications through webhooks, are in the works at Meta, which has just integrated reply management capabilities.

Grabyo, Hootsuite, and Sprout Social are among the partners with whom Meta collaborates on the API rollout. Another feature that has just been tested lets certain users choose whether their posts are archived automatically or by hand after a certain amount of time. It is worth noting that according to recent app analytics, Threads may have more active users in the US daily than X.

With a 7% increase year-on-year, Meta’s social media portfolio now boasts over 3.24 billion daily active users across all its applications. Although Threads hasn’t officially adopted Meta’s generative AI chatbot technology just yet, the social media behemoth is making a significant investment in the space with its newly launched AI chatbot that is powered by Meta’s most recent large language model.

About Threads

A social networking platform that stands out from the crowd, Threads debuted in 2022 and emphasises genuine conversations and connections. People talk about all sorts of things, from their interests to their careers, in interest-based communities. One essential feature is the ability to remain anonymous, which allows users to express themselves freely without worrying about who they are. To improve engagement and relevance, the app uses an advanced algorithm to curate content that is personalised to each user’s interests.

By quickly addressing community guidelines violations, the integrated moderation tools maintain a positive and respectful environment. Threads stand out from the crowd because it challenges the status quo of social media by emphasising meaningful connections rather than sheer volume. Threads stand out from other social networking platforms by fostering meaningful conversations and connections, appealing to users looking for honest interaction and growth online.

Writer’s note: ‘Threads stands’ is not an error. Grammarly doesn’t recognise the social app ‘Threads’. The ‘s’ there is part of its name and does not indicate multiples. Same as with the title.
