After a successful four-year run in South Africa, Yaga, a popular preloved goods marketplace app, has officially expanded its operations to Kenya. With nearly 2 million items sold and KSh 4.2 billion earned by sellers in South Africa, Yaga is set to transform the Kenyan market for second-hand goods.

Top sellers on the platform can make up to KSh 140,000 per month, according to CEO and Founder Aune Aunapuu, who highlights the platform’s emphasis on offering a reliable and user-friendly experience. Customers also benefit from 50–80 percent off retail prices.

Integration of M-Pesa into Yaga

One of Yaga’s standout features is its integration with M-Pesa, Kenya’s leading mobile payment system, making transactions seamless for users. The platform also includes localised logistical solutions and an escrow system, where funds are held until buyers confirm the quality of the items received. These features ensure a secure and efficient process for both parties.

The move into Kenya complements Yaga’s objective of encouraging thoughtful consumerism and sustainable fashion while providing a substitute for traditional shopping in the run-up to Black Friday.

The platform not only makes it easier to buy and sell used goods, but it also helps the environment by prolonging product lifecycles and cutting down on waste from the fashion industry, which the World Economic Forum’s 2021 report ranks as the third-largest polluter in the world.

The goal of this community-based marketplace is to modernise interpersonal trade while increasing Kenyan customers’ access to high-quality used goods.
