In a historic effort to support continental integration and mobility, Ghana has joined Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin in granting visa-free travel to all holders of African passports.

Outgoing President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo approved the visa-free entry policy to Ghana for all African nationals on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

The policy is scheduled to go into effect before Akufo-Addo’s term ends on January 6, 2025.

This fulfils the president’s pledge made at the Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD 2024) in January 2024 to allow citizens of all African countries to visit Ghana without a visa.

Implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement

This will ensure economic integration and promote the free flow of people, products, and services throughout the continent, which is the driving force behind the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

In his keynote speech for APD 2024, which focused on the subject “Developing Prosperity in Africa: Produce, Add Value, and Trade,” President Akufo-Addo emphasised Ghana’s dedication to the visa-free program.

“Many of you had to acquire a visa to attend this event,” he said, adding that “The government of Ghana is committed to ensuring visa-free travel for all Africans, and the process has begun to implement the policy this year.”
