As the clock struck midnight on January 1, 2025, individuals across the globe celebrated the promise of new beginnings —another opportunity to fulfill their goals and aspirations.

For many people, this time of year is associated with setting New Year’s resolutions—personal commitments that often spark hope and ambition.

For some, new year resolutions could mean weight loss, landing a dream job at the Big Four, getting that certification,  learning  a new skill, relocating to another country, acquiring a new degree and the list goes on and on.

Setting goals is the easy part, staying the course till they are achieved is the hard part.

Some Nigerians have derided the idea of new year resolution calling it a self-inflicted pressure that lasts for the first few weeks in the new year because individuals often lack the discipline required to realise their set goals.

X handler @ErphemX described new year goals as “just mere wishes” if the individual fails to take responsibility and put in the work.

“You all with the “new year, new me” resolution… It’s just another [sic] to show working, not just mere wishes. Get locked in 2025.”

Chinedu Okwuosa, a 28-year-old software engineer based in Lagos, shared his determination to prioritise his health this year on social media. “I want to focus on my health this year,” he said. Last year was tough; I let work consume me. This time, I’m determined to make fitness a priority.”

His commitment reflects a growing trend among professionals in Nigeria who are increasingly aware of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle amidst demanding careers.

These sincere resolutions reveal a more significant aspiration among Nigerians for individual and group development.

As technology becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives, various applications have been developed to assist people in achieving their goals.

These digital tools can help users realise their goals  in various areas, from skill development and financial management to exercise and nutrition.

Top apps for new year’s resolutions

Streaks: This habit-tracking app allows users to create up to 24 daily tasks, helping them form good habits while breaking bad ones. Users can maintain streaks that reinforce their commitment to their resolutions by marking completed tasks.

MyFitnessPal: A popular choice for those looking to eat healthier or lose weight, MyFitnessPal enables users to log meals from an extensive food database. It helps track daily calorie intake and nutritional goals, making it easier to stay accountable.

YNAB (You Need A Budget): YNAB is an excellent budgeting tool for those focused on financial health. It lets users connect their bank accounts, set budgets for different categories, and track expenses in real-time, promoting better financial management.

Duolingo: If learning a new language is on your resolution list, Duolingo makes the process enjoyable with gamified lessons. Users can learn independently while engaging with interactive exercises that enhance language skills.

Nike Training Club: This fitness app offers a variety of workouts led by professional trainers catering to all fitness levels. With no subscription required, it provides an accessible way for users to incorporate exercise into their routines.

Embracing technology for personal growth

The founder of MyFitnessPal, Mike Lee, emphasised the importance of making healthy choices accessible for everyone, stating, “We want to empower people to take control of their health.”

This sentiment resonates deeply in Nigeria, where many are increasingly aware of the need for healthier lifestyles.

As Nigerians reflect on their resolutions for 2025, these apps offer functionalities tailored to various goals and foster a sense of community among users striving for similar aspirations.

The journey towards self-improvement can be challenging; however, individuals can find support and motivation with these digital companions.

In his New Year address, President Bola Tinubu expressed optimism for 2025 while outlining his administration’s goals to reduce inflation from 34.6 percent to 15 percent and enhance food production.

This commitment aligns with the aspirations of many Nigerians who hope for economic stability alongside personal growth.

As we embrace 2025, we hope these applications will help transform resolutions into reality and inspire Nigerians to pursue personal growth with renewed vigour. Whether improving physical health or learning new skills, technology is paving the way for a more organised and fulfilling year.
