The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center (NPF-NCCC) has been recognised as the Best Cybercrime Unit in Africa for 2024 by the INTERPOL Cybercrime Directorate, based in Singapore. The award highlights the NPF-NCCC’s exceptional efforts in combating cybercrime and improving public safety online, placing it ahead of 54 other African nations.

In 2024, the NPF-NCCC made significant strides in tackling cybercrime, arresting 751 cybercriminals and recovering N8.82 billion (N8,821,001,881.80) in illicit funds. The unit also confiscated 115,237.91 USDT and $84,000 in cryptocurrency and cash, the police said in a statement on Tuesday.

The NPF-NCCC’s operations were not limited to financial recoveries. They also seized 685 devices, including 467 mobile phones, 137 laptops and desktops, 46 routers, 4 servers, 1 drone, and 4 Starlink devices, which had been used in criminal activities.

Additionally, the team seized 26 vehicles, 39 land plots, 16 homes, and 14 land documents, further dismantling the infrastructure of cybercrime operations.

By battling cyber threats and remaining one step ahead of cybercriminals, the Nigeria Police continue to improve the country’s comprehensive cybersecurity framework and safeguard the welfare of the citizens in the digital age.

Ongoing efforts and future goals

The NPF-NCCC continues to build on its successes, with recent arrests of Douglass Victor, Egbo Efe Martins, Lucky Adesunloye, and Ndifreke Joseph Moody, all accused of various cybercrime-related offenses. These efforts demonstrate the NPF-NCCC’s commitment to protecting the digital landscape in Nigeria.

As part of its ongoing mission, the Nigerian Police Force encourages citizens to stay vigilant online. They urge Nigerians to exercise caution when exchanging sensitive information or interacting with unfamiliar online entities. The police also stress the importance of promoting cyber awareness and responsible online behaviour to enhance national cybersecurity.
