Tems wins first solo Grammy award for Best African Music Performance

Nigerian female artiste, Temilade Openiyi, popularly called Tems, won a Grammy award for the Best African Music Performance category with Love Me Jeje on Sunday at Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California.

Tems earned her first Grammy nomination in 2021 for a feature on Wizkid’s Essence and won her first Grammys in 2023 for Best Melodic Rap Performance while collaborating with Future and Drake on Wait For You in 2023.

The Sunday win was her first solo Grammy award.

She beat industry top players like Burna Boy, Wizkid,Yemi Alade, Asake and Lojay to clinch the highly coveted award.

“Woah, my heart is beating so fast. Dear God, thank you so much for bringing me to this team,” Tems said on stage flanked by her mother and team members. 

“Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday, and this is her first Grammys. I just want to thank you, mum, because she’s really done a lot for me and my brother. I want to thank my team—thank you so much. To God be the glory, because honestly, He’s changed my life so much. Thank you so much, thank you God,” Tems added.

She lost the other two nominations to SZA in Best R&B Song and Matt B ft Royal  Philharmonic Orchestra’ in Best Global Album. 

Tems co-wrote Rihanna’s Lift Me Up and her contribution got her several nominations from Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Grammy nominations as well.
