Maroc Telecom, Morocco’s leading telecommunications provider, has announced a significant leadership change with the appointment of Mohamed Benchaaboun as the new Chairman of the Management Board. This decision, made by the company’s supervisory board on Tuesday, marks the end of Abdeslam Ahizoune’s 27-year tenure.

Benchaaboun’s appointment is set for a two-year term, from March 1, 2025, until March 1, 2027. The leadership shift comes at a pivotal time as the company faces financial challenges and competitive pressures.

Why the change? A new chapter for Maroc Telecom

The decision to appoint Mohamed Benchaaboun follows a tumultuous period for Maroc Telecom, including a $630 million fine for unfair competition practices against its competitor Inwi. This fine, which exceeds the company’s 2023 profit of 6.1 billion dirhams, has put Maroc Telecom under financial strain, prompting a strategic shift in leadership.

With his extensive background in finance and governance, including his roles as Morocco’s former Minister of Economy and Finance and Director General of the Mohammed VI Investment Fund, Benchaaboun is seen as the right candidate to navigate these challenges and drive strategic growth.

Benchaaboun’s Vision

Taking the helm at a critical juncture, Benchaaboun is expected to bring a fresh perspective to Maroc Telecom’s strategic direction. His leadership is anticipated to ease tensions with the Emirati investors who control 53 per cent of the company through Etisalat, and potentially resolve the ongoing dispute with Inwi.

Furthermore, his diplomatic background as Morocco’s Ambassador to France positions him as a capable negotiator, which could prove valuable in navigating regulatory challenges and competitive pressures in both the Moroccan and African markets.

What’s next for Maroc Telecom?

Under Benchaaboun’s leadership, Maroc Telecom aims to strengthen its market position while expanding its footprint in African markets. The company, which currently operates in nine African countries, is expected to leverage its established network and continue its growth trajectory.

With a renewed management board and Benchaaboun’s strategic vision, Maroc Telecom looks poised to overcome its challenges and drive innovation in Morocco’s telecommunications sector.

This leadership change signals the beginning of a new era for Maroc Telecom, one that holds promise for growth, innovation, and a stronger competitive edge. All eyes are now on Benchaaboun to see how he navigates this new chapter for one of Morocco’s most influential companies.
