WhatsApp is improving its audio and video calling features by adding new options that allow users to mute their microphones and turn off their cameras before answering calls.

This development was announced on Monday and is currently available to select beta testers.

Enhanced call controls

WhatsApp is testing a mute button for incoming voice calls. This button appears in the notification panel and allows users to silence their microphone before picking up the call. This feature is useful in noisy environments or when users must quickly accept a call without engaging immediately.

WhatsApp is introducing a “Turn off your video” option for video calls, enabling users to accept calls without turning on their camera. This feature is handy for maintaining privacy, especially when receiving calls from unknown numbers or at unexpected moments.

Users now have the option to participate in voice-only mode, which can be helpful when they are not ready to show themselves on camera.

Emoji reactions for video calls

In addition to the mute and camera-off options, WhatsApp tests emoji reactions for video calls. This feature allows participants to react with up to six emojis in real time, making video calls more engaging and fun.

As Beebom notes, this feature is especially useful in group calls, where quick, non-verbal feedback can enhance interaction without interrupting the conversation.

These features are currently available in the WhatsApp Beta version 2.25.10.16 for Android and are expected to roll out to more users in the coming weeks. As WhatsApp continues to refine its calling experience, these updates reflect the platform’s focus on user privacy and control.
