Spar, a late entrant into the e-commerce grocery market, is rapidly catching up by focusing on South Africa’s underserved townships and rural areas. With its Spar2U platform, the retailer has managed to address key logistical challenges in these regions, such as limited infrastructure and high delivery risks.

According to the retailer, the platform has begun “transforming township and rural delivery through smart local partnerships.” The retailer launched Spar2U in July 2022, making it a latecomer to the market.

Spar leads in market value

Spar2U now dominates the market in value after recording a 285 percent year-over-year increase in orders from just 87 sites in 2022 to over 500 sites.

Through strategic partnerships with local players KasiD and Delivery KA Speed, Spar is transforming how residents in areas like Mamelodi, Ivory Park, and Hammanskraal access grocery delivery while also tackling the high costs and dangers often associated with last-mile delivery in these communities.

Crucially, it is assisting in resolving long-standing last-mile delivery issues in places like Ivory Park, Mamelodi, and Hammanskraal through its partnership with KasiD and Delivery KA Speed.

“While urban areas have quickly adopted online grocery shopping, rural and township communities have traditionally been underserved due to logistical challenges, including a lack of navigation systems, high crime rates, and poor infrastructure,” the company said in the statement.

Advantages of Spar’s partnership with KasiD and Delivery KA Speed

Spar’s partnership with KasiD and Delivery KA Speed has been instrumental in overcoming the unique challenges of delivering groceries in rural and township areas. The partnerships allow Spar to:

  • Leverage Local Knowledge: By working with local delivery teams, Spar can navigate through complex rural and informal communities, improving delivery efficiency.
  • Enhance Safety: Local delivery personnel are better equipped to handle the risks of working in unfamiliar and sometimes dangerous areas, ensuring safer deliveries for both workers and consumers.
  • Reduce Costs: The partnerships enable consumers to consolidate their orders, splitting delivery expenses and reducing the financial burden of transportation fees, such as taxi fares.

Spar revolutionising grocery delivery in rural South Africa

Spar noted that the Spar2U platform is revolutionising the way underprivileged communities purchase food in addition to making grocery shopping more accessible.

“E-grocery growth will remain ahead of brick-and-mortar for the foreseeable future,” said Spar Group omnichannel executive Blake Raubenheimer in the statement.

The emphasis will switch to turning a profit in the face of intense competition. The growth of Spar2U shows a lot of momentum and offers a chance for successful online expansion.
