Algeria Telecom on Wednesday launched a nationwide online survey to help identify neighbourhoods still lacking Fibre to the Home (FTTH) internet. The initiative invites Algerians, particularly neighborhood committees, to submit detailed information about unconnected areas.
The goal is to support the company’s 2026 action plan to expand high-speed internet access across the country and bridge existing digital gaps.
FTTH expansion strategy focuses on public participation
The new survey, described by Algeria Telecom as a “participatory mechanism,” is open to the public, particularly neighborhood committees, who are encouraged to submit information about areas that are not connected.
Participants must provide details such as neighborhood names, household counts, and GPS coordinates. The submission form is available online until July 31, 2025.
This grassroots approach is central to Algeria Telecom’s effort to identify and include underserved zones in its next wave of fibre deployment. By crowdsourcing data from local communities, the telecom operator aims to create a clearer picture of connectivity gaps and tailor its infrastructure rollouts to meet the real-life needs of its customers.
Engaging civil society isn’t just about data collection, it’s also about giving residents a voice in shaping their digital future. Algeria Telecom hopes this dialogue will strengthen trust and align its service delivery with the expectations of citizens, especially those in rural or overlooked areas.
Algeria’s fibre rollout progress and digital divide challenges
Algeria Telecom has experienced impressive growth in fibre subscriptions, increasing from 53,000 FTTH customers in 2020 to over 2 million by April 2025. Despite this progress, that figure still covers only around 27% of the country’s 7.4 million households.
According to DataReportal, internet penetration in Algeria reached 76.9% at the start of 2025; however, a significant portion of this still relies on mobile connections.
The current initiative seeks to close this gap by shifting more households to stable, high-speed fibre connections. Authorities previously reported that more than 1.5 million homes had already been connected to the national FTTH grid by late 2024. The 2026 action plan will now focus on expanding this coverage to reach even more families.
Algeria Telecom is also collaborating with local entrepreneurs and small businesses to accelerate the delivery of last-mile fibre in hard-to-reach areas. This collaboration aims to remove infrastructure barriers and ensure no region is left behind in the country’s digital transformation.
