Ethiopia’s GERD project adopts ZTE’s advanced FTTR-B optical network

Botswana telecom integrates DZS technology into fibre network

ZTE Corporation, a world-renowned supplier of integrated information and communication technology solutions, announced on Wednesday that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) project’s office building has successfully adopted ZTE’s advanced FTTR-B all-optical network.

ZTE offers a full range of services, from a thorough solution design to equipment procurement and installation assistance, under the direction of Ethiopia’s state-owned operator, Ethio Telecom.

The informatisation of Ethiopia’s major national projects is gaining significant momentum thanks to this project, which represents a new milestone in the two sides’ growing cooperation in the creation of digital infrastructure.

As the centre of the project, the GERD office building is essential to coordination, dispatch, and day-to-day operations, necessitating a highly reliable, secure, and intelligent network.

The GERD is the largest hydropower project in Africa and has become a potent symbol of Ethiopia’s national renaissance, ensuring nationwide power supply, supporting industrial development, and driving rural electrification.

In order to facilitate internet access, voice communication, and security surveillance, traditional Ethernet networks frequently have limited bandwidth and need three distinct networks. Complex architectures, high deployment costs, low reliability, and challenging operations and maintenance are the outcomes of this.

ZTE gave Ethio Telecom a customised FTTR-B solution to get over these restrictions, turning the GERD office building into Africa’s first all-optical government office standard.

The solution has helped the GERD enter a new era of smart office management by greatly enhancing the office experience and operating efficiency with its high bandwidth, low latency, outstanding stability, and comprehensive coverage.

Features of the FTTR-B all-optical network

The tailored implementation, which includes cloud-based smart O&M, unified service integration, and all-optical coverage, establishes a standard for effective, scalable digital infrastructure in national-level initiatives.

All-optical seamless coverage: The implementation includes 34 optical access points (APs) and the FTTR-B gateway ZXEN G100S, which provides gigabit fibre coverage in all conference rooms, office spaces, and leisure areas.

Three-in-one unified network: The system can provide a 25 percent reduction in implementation costs by integrating multiple services, such as phone communication, data access, shared printing, and security monitoring, into a single network design.

Internal and external line interdialing, short number calling, and IP phone interoperability are all made possible by the FTTR-B gateway’s integrated voice server, which enhances communication effectiveness.

Smart and economical O&M: The system is linked with ZENIC ONE, ZTE’s in-house unified cloud management platform, which allows for automatic fault detection, remote troubleshooting, topology visualisation, and report generation. This enhances maintenance efficiency by 30 percent.

Secure access management: Information security is maintained and flexible office applications are supported by the integrated portal authentication server, which guarantees distinct network access for staff members and guests.

FTTR-B, an enterprise-grade FTTR solution, not only gets around the bandwidth and wiring constraints of conventional Ethernet networks, but it also offers a blueprint for creating straightforward, effective, safe, and intelligent network architectures for businesses and governments.

In order to jointly create a digital Africa and embrace an intelligent future, ZTE and Ethio Telecom will continue their relationship going forward, expanding the use of FTTR throughout the African market and accelerating the digital transformation of more national-level projects.
