Ogun State has boldly revolutionised farming by launching AgriConnect, a digital platform designed to empower 1,000 farmers with cutting-edge technology. This effort, announced on June 5, uses AI and mobile connectivity to improve regional farmers’ agricultural practices and market access.
AgriConnect: Bridging technology and agriculture for farmers
AgriConnect is not just another farming program; it is a technology-driven ecosystem that connects farmers to vital resources, market intelligence, and agricultural expertise through mobile platforms.
Initially, the project targets 1,000 farmers randomly selected from the Ogun State Farmers Information Management System (OGFIMS), Nigeria’s first comprehensive digital farmers’ database with over 160,000 registered farmers.
The platform offers real-time data on weather patterns, pest control, crop management, and market prices, enabling farmers to make informed decisions.
According to a statement from the MTN Foundation, a key partner in the project, “AgriConnect empowers farmers with mobile-based agricultural intelligence and market connectivity, enhancing productivity and profitability”.
Collaborative effort to boost food production
The launch of AgriConnect is a collaboration between the Ogun State Government, the Federal Government of Nigeria, and the MTN Foundation.
This partnership aims to boost food production by leveraging digital innovation to address challenges faced by farmers, such as limited access to information and markets.
At the launch, Dr Bosun Tijani emphasised the initiative’s role in transforming agriculture: “This is a significant step towards revolutionising agriculture through technology, ensuring farmers are equipped with the tools to succeed in a competitive market.”
The Ogun State Commissioner for Agriculture highlighted that the initiative goes beyond productivity, aiming to create a holistic support system for farmers, including training, financial services, and supply chain integration.
This comprehensive approach is expected to increase yields and improve livelihoods for the selected farmers, setting a model for digital agriculture in Nigeria.
AgriConnect represents a pioneering effort in digital agriculture, combining AI and connectivity to empower farmers directly. By connecting 1,000 farmers to this innovative platform, Ogun State sets a new standard for agricultural development in Africa.
