On Thursday, June 12, Instagram announced a major update allowing users to rearrange their profile grids and post content quietly without pushing it to followers’ feeds. This long-awaited grid editing feature breaks from Instagram’s traditional chronological layout, giving users complete control to curate their visual narrative.

Rearranging your Instagram grid: A new level of customisation

Instagram users have struggled with the fixed chronological order of posts on their profile grids for years. All users will soon be able to press and hold a post or select “Edit Grid” in the profile menu to drag and drop photos and videos anywhere on their grid. Changes save automatically; an undo option is available for each editing session.

Chloe Newell, Lead Digital Content Strategist at Torro Media, said, “Instagram just addressed the one thing we’ve all been asking for. No longer will you need to delete and repost to achieve the right aesthetic. Want your top content to shine? Go ahead. Need to conceal a certain post while keeping it live? Just push it down to the bottom”. This update caters to aesthetic enthusiasts, brands, and creators who want to highlight their best work without losing older content.

Quiet posting and creator support: Redefining how content is shared

Alongside grid editing, Instagram is testing a “quiet mode” that lets users post to their profile without broadcasting the update to followers’ home feeds. Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, explained, “Creative expression can feel intimidating, especially when posting something to feed. We’re exploring a way to let you quietly post to your profile without broadcasting it to everyone’s feeds”.

This feature encourages experimentation by reducing pressure on creators. Instagram’s “trial reels” expand this idea by allowing creators to post videos that initially don’t appear to followers but can reach a wider non-follower audience. According to Instagram, 40 per cent of users who tried trial reels started posting more often, with 80 per cent reporting higher reach among non-followers.

Instagram also launched Drafts, a program designed to nurture emerging creators through mentorship, collaboration, and exposure rather than direct funding.

Early partners include artists like Sailorr and Tyrell Hampton. Mosseri emphasised, “I want Instagram to be a venue where people unite through creativity. For this to happen, we must progress alongside the evolution of creativity”.

Additional updates include a new Spotify integration for sharing current music via Instagram Notes and a handwriting-inspired font for Stories and Reels created with Spanish singer Rosalía, adding a playful touch to personalisation.

The grid editing and quiet posting features begin rolling out today, Monday, June 16, marking a shift in how Instagram users control their content and creative expression.
