On Sunday, Safaricom Ethiopia embarked on an ambitious initiative by relaunching its network expansion in Arbaminch city. This initiative combined community support with improved connectivity, boosting digital access and demonstrating the company’s commitment to social responsibility in Ethiopia.
Network expansion enhances digital access in Arbaminch
The relaunch of Safaricom’s network expansion in Arbaminch marks a crucial step in increasing 4G coverage in the region. The company has deployed thousands of network sites nationwide, with nearly half of Ethiopia’s population now enjoying 4G connectivity. Safaricom Ethiopia’s CEO, Wim Vanhelleputte, emphasized that this expansion is about “more than connectivity; it’s about building stronger communities.”
This network growth supports the country’s digital transformation by enabling faster and more reliable internet access, essential for education, business, and communication. The expansion in Arbaminch is part of Safaricom Ethiopia’s broader strategy to reach underserved areas and empower local populations through technology.
Donation of 500,000 Birr to vulnerable communities
Alongside the technical upgrade, Safaricom Ethiopia donated 500,000 Birr to support vulnerable communities in Arbaminch.
This contribution aims to improve social welfare and provide resources for local development projects. The company stated that its investment in community programs totals over 100 million Birr, covering digital access for schools, youth skills training, and disaster response efforts.
The donation reflects Safaricom’s philosophy of integrating business growth with social impact. “We are pleased to note the contributions our business has made in enabling Ethiopia’s digital transformation in communication, connectivity, and payments,” said Vanhelleputte, highlighting the company’s dual focus on technology and compassion.
Safaricom’s role in Ethiopia’s digital transformation
Safaricom Ethiopia’s rapid growth is evident in its financial and operational results. Revenue surged by 270% to 7.2 billion ETB in the fiscal year ending March 2025. The customer base more than doubled to 8.8 million active users, with M-PESA Ethiopia serving 2.4 million users and processing transactions worth 15.8 billion ETB.
This expansion and community support in Arbaminch demonstrate Safaricom’s strategic leadership in Ethiopia’s telecom sector. The company’s efforts contribute to broader economic inclusion and digital empowerment, aligning with government reforms and regulatory support. As Safaricom continues to scale its network and social programs, it solidifies its position as a key player in Ethiopia’s evolving digital economy.
Safaricom Ethiopia’s network relaunch and community donation in Arbaminch on Sunday underscore the company’s commitment to combining connectivity with social responsibility, benefiting both technology users and local communities.
