Amazon on July 3 announced that it will shut down its Freevee streaming app in August 2025. The Freevee app, known for offering free, ad-supported movies, TV shows, and live channels, will no longer be accessible after this date. Instead, all Freevee content will move exclusively to Prime Video, Amazon’s flagship streaming platform, where users can continue watching without a subscription fee.
Freevee content moves to Prime Video in August
Freevee, initially launched in 2019 as IMDb TV, gained popularity for its free ad-supported content, including originals like Bosch: Legacy and Jury Duty. Amazon’s decision to retire the Freevee app is part of a larger strategy to simplify its streaming services by consolidating content under the Prime Video brand.
A message inside the Freevee app informs users that “Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies, and Live TV,” urging viewers to download Prime Video and sign in with their Amazon account to continue watching.
Amazon has not made a loud public announcement about the shutdown; instead, it has opted for in-app notifications to inform users. This means that regular Freevee users will be aware of the change, but infrequent users might only discover the app’s closure when they try to access it after August.
The company emphasised that no subscription will be required to access Freevee content on Prime Video, maintaining the free, ad-supported model within the larger platform.
Amazon’s move to phase out Freevee follows the introduction of ads on Prime Video earlier this year. Prime Video now offers ad-supported viewing alongside its paid membership options. By integrating Freevee’s library into Prime Video, Amazon aims to create a more straightforward and unified viewing experience for customers, reducing the need to juggle multiple apps for free and paid content.
This consolidation reflects Amazon’s broader competitive strategy in the streaming market, where it faces rivals like Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max. By bringing Freevee’s free content into Prime Video, Amazon hopes to attract a wider audience and increase engagement on its primary streaming platform.
Starting in August, users who want to keep watching their favourite Freevee Originals and other free shows can do so on Prime Video. The transition will not affect the content availability for Prime members, and non-Prime users will still have access to various free, ad-supported movies, series, and live channels on Prime Video.
Amazon’s decision to retire Freevee underscores the streaming giant’s ongoing efforts to streamline its services and focus on Prime Video as the central hub for paid and free content. The Freevee app will remain accessible until August 2025, giving users time to adjust to the change and migrate their viewing habits to Prime Video.
