To compete with Google and Microsoft in the consumer internet market, Perplexity AI unveiled Comet, a new web browser driven by artificial intelligence.

In a short demo video released on Wednesday, Perplexity said Comet will enable users to ask sophisticated questions by text and voice and connect to enterprise apps like Slack.

The browser is accessible to Perplexity Max subscribers, and the company stated that invite-only access will be made available to a waitlist during the summer. Users must pay $200 a month for Perplexity Max.

“We built Comet to let the internet do what it has been begging to do: to amplify our intelligence,” Perplexity wrote in a blog post Wednesday.

AI-powered search engine

The most well-known feature of Perplexity is its AI-powered search engine, which provides users with straightforward answers to queries and links to the original online content.

The business introduced a revenue-sharing arrangement with publishers last year after being charged with copying content from media sources.

A source close to Perplexity told CNBC that the company was in late-stage negotiations to raise $500 million in May at a valuation of $14 billion.

Meta also reached out to the startup but the businesses could not reach an agreement earlier this year regarding a possible acquisition.

“We will continue to launch new features and functionality for Comet, improve experiences based on your feedback, and focus relentlessly–as we always have–on building accurate and trustworthy AI that fuels human curiosity,” Perplexity said Wednesday.

Perplexity AI’s partnership with Coinbase

Techpression reported on Saturday that Perplexity AI partners with Coinbase, the cryptocurrency exchange, to provide traders worldwide with real-time crypto market data.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced the collaboration on Thursday on X and is being rolled out in two official phases.

It aims to provide users, particularly those in emerging markets, including Africa, with faster and more reliable access to real-time digital asset insights.

Coinbase’s market data available on Perplexity’s new Comet browser

In Phase 1, market data from Coinbase, including the exchange’s proprietary COIN50 index, is now available on Perplexity’s new Comet browser.

Using real-time, AI-driven search capabilities, this tool allows users to explore crypto price action, token fundamentals, and broader market trends.

The second phase of the integration will deepen the connection between the two platforms.

Coinbase’s real-time data will be embedded into Perplexity’s conversational AI, allowing users to screen tokens, analyse on-chain activity, and generate trading ideas using natural language queries.

This means users in Africa and elsewhere can soon ask AI questions like “Which altcoins gained the most this week?” and get immediate, data-backed answers.

Armstrong described this deeper fusion of crypto and AI as part of a broader shift toward a decentralised digital economy. He believes such tools will reshape how traders and everyday users interact with blockchain technology.

“Enhanced crypto functionality will be a catalyst for AI to achieve another 10x unlock,” he said, adding that he is most excited to see crypto wallets fully integrated into LLMs one day.
