ChatGPT’s record mode arrives on macOS for Plus users

OpenAI has officially launched Record Mode for ChatGPT Plus subscribers using the macOS desktop app, as announced on Wednesday.

This powerful tool automatically transforms how users handle meetings and voice notes by transcribing and summarising conversations.

Record mode empowers Mac users to capture and summarise meetings

With Record Mode now accessible to ChatGPT Plus users worldwide on Mac, users see a “Rec” button within the app’s input window. Pressing lets them record the microphone and system audio during calls or meetings.

Once the recording stops, the audio is sent securely to OpenAI’s servers, where the AI transcribes the content and produces organised notes, including summaries, action items, and timestamped references.

The feature debuted for Team, Enterprise, and Education users in June 2025 but has now been expanded to individual Plus subscribers.

Importantly, recordings are limited to 120 minutes, and the original audio is deleted post-transcription to maintain privacy.

OpenAI reminds users: “Please make sure you check local laws and always get the right consents before recording others”, underscoring privacy considerations involved in this recording capability.

This innovation sets ChatGPT apart from other AI meeting assistants, which must join calls as visible participants.

Instead, ChatGPT’s Record Mode listens locally through the macOS app, making it less intrusive.

The generated notes can be revisited anytime in chat history, helping users efficiently manage follow-ups and plans without missing details.

However, the feature is currently exclusive to macOS, and no Windows or mobile versions have been announced.

Additionally, workspace administrators can disable Record Mode in team environments if needed.

OpenAI’s expansion of Record Mode to ChatGPT Plus comes as AI-powered productivity tools rapidly evolve and integrate into daily workflows, particularly for remote and hybrid work.

Enabling seamless capturing and summarisation of spoken content aligns with the growing demand among professionals for more innovative meeting management.
