Africa’s leading patient-centred, technology-driven healthcare company, mPharma, acquired the majority stake in HealthPlus, the leading pharmacy chain in Nigeria. Alta Semper, a former investor, and mPharma have signed a deal that will allow mPharma to buy a majority stake in the HealthPlus Group.

Gregory Rockson, the CEO and co-founder of mPharma, says that the acquisition fits with the company’s goal of making Africa a healthy place by giving patients life-changing healthcare services and drugs that improve their health. He stated that the acquisition of the HealthPlus Pharmacy chain by mPharma “complements” mPharma’s deep commitment to increasing patient access to affordable and quality healthcare in Nigeria.

By improving basic health care for some of Africa’s poorest people, mPharma is strengthening its long-term commitment to the continent. We keep converting neighborhood pharmacies into primary care facilities to provide everyone access to inexpensive, high-quality healthcare and help them live longer, healthier lives. Through the purchase of HealthPlus, we are confident about the future of healthcare for Nigerians,” Rockson stated.

The deal with HealthPlus was reached two years after Alta Semper Capital agreed to invest $18 million in the company on the condition that Bukky George, the founder and CEO of HealthPlus, would provide Alta Semper Capital with a controlling interest in order to realize their investment.

We firmly believe in mPharma’s plan to transform primary healthcare in Africa and think mPharma is the best custodian for HealthPlus’s next development phase. We think mPharma’s goal aligns with HealthPlus’s shareholders and staff, and we are eager to assist the company moving forward via a partnership with mPharma.

mPharma plans to keep and grow HealthPlus as Nigeria’s top pharmacy brand. The purchase will also give the company options for growth in Nigeria and a base from which to expand its retail presence across the continent through its rapidly growing QualityRx program. HealthPlus will provide patients access to cheap primary care services inside its pharmacies and the affordable and high-quality drugs it now sells throughout 12 states in Nigeria.

MPharma’s in-house Bloom software powers HealthPlus. mutti®, mPharma’s health membership program, will also be part of the HealthPlus pharmacy network. This program will save current and potential customers money on primary care and offer “heal-now-pay-later” options and free health tests. By connecting HealthPlus pharmacies to mPharma’s growing network of partner mutti pharmacies and good health stores (PPMVs), the company’s network of healthcare facilities in Nigeria will grow from 224 to over 320 and be able to treat more than 100,000 Nigerians each month.

About mPharma

The healthcare organization mPharma is technology-driven and patient-focused. It gives community pharmacies access to cutting-edge services, such as vendor-managed inventory services, retail and primary care solutions, and data analytics.

Its headquarters in Ghana were established in 2013 and have since grown to include Nigeria, Zambia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Gabon, Togo, and Uganda as additional markets. We currently provide more than 100,000 patients monthly via a network of over 400 pharmacies in our core areas.
