Egypt’s power grid hits record 39,400 MW amid intense heatwave

Egypt’s national electricity grid hit a historic milestone on Sunday, reaching an all-time high of 39,400 megawatts (MW) in demand, according to the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy.

The record-setting load, which surpassed last year’s peak by 1,400 MW, comes amid an intense heatwave sweeping across the country, with real-feel temperatures soaring above 43°C in parts of Cairo and the Delta.

The surge in consumption is being driven largely by the heavy use of air conditioning and cooling systems as Egyptians seek relief from the extreme weather. Despite the spike, the grid held steady, reflecting major upgrades and a strategic maintenance plan implemented by the ministry over the past year.

How Egypt’s electricity grid stayed strong under pressure

Handling such a sharp increase in electricity demand wasn’t by chance. The Ministry of Electricity credits its success to a year-long emergency action plan designed to improve the grid’s efficiency, reliability, and response time.

This plan included strict adherence to international maintenance standards, enhanced operational protocols, and continuous upgrades across the power infrastructure.

Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat said the ability to manage the spike without disruptions was a direct result of the country’s commitment to performance and preparedness.

Sunday’s record also beat the previous day’s near-peak load of 38,800 MW, which was already an all-time high before the weekend.

The National Energy Control Centre (NECC) has been monitoring consumption patterns closely, noting that such levels are unusual for this time of year. Previously, Egypt only hit 38,000 MW once, during an exceptionally severe heatwave in 2024.

Emergency teams and better monitoring kept the lights on

Authorities rolled out a full-scale readiness strategy to maintain grid stability. This included deploying emergency response teams and technical support across the country, intensifying maintenance checks, and ensuring continuous communication with consumers through an integrated complaint system.

Utility leaders were instructed to stay on the ground and closely supervise operations.

Minister Esmat also emphasised the importance of real-time monitoring and a proactive approach to quickly identify and respond to faults or power outages.

Consumers are encouraged to report issues promptly, and all complaints are tracked through a centralised digital platform to ensure rapid resolution.

Heatwave continues as authorities brace for more demand

According to the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, the record load coincides with a severe heatwave forecasted to last until at least Thursday, July 31.

The ministry is maintaining high alert levels throughout the week to ensure consistent power supply.

At the same time, the Petroleum Ministry has pledged to secure a stable supply of natural gas for electricity generation and industrial use, ensuring that power plants continue to meet rising demands.

With more hot days ahead, the electricity grid’s performance will likely be tested again. But for now, Egypt’s energy sector is proving that preparation pays off, especially when the heat is on.
