Uber Boda has announced sweeping upgrades to motorcycle safety and service reliability across Kenya. The e-hailing company made the announcement on Tuesday, July 29.
These improvements blend advanced technology with professional training to ensure safer rides in the country’s popular motorcycle taxi sector, also known as boda bodas. With over 2.5 million registered motorcycles nationwide, this upgrade targets improved travel confidence and transparency for millions of daily users.
New safety technologies in Uber Boda ride experience
Uber has integrated real-time GPS tracking on every ride, allowing trip monitoring from start to finish. Riders can also share their trip details, route, and estimated arrival time with trusted contacts through the “Share My Trip” feature. An in-app emergency button connects passengers instantly to emergency services when needed.
Drivers undergo strict background checks and professional safety training focused on road safety and customer service. This ensures every Uber Boda rider travels with verified and skilled drivers.
Cassie Jaganyi, Head of Communications for Uber Sub-Saharan Africa, said, “Safety has always been at the core of everything we do at Uber… Our technology and training standards set a new benchmark for motorcycle taxi safety in Kenya”.
The system also provides upfront fare pricing, reducing disputes and enhancing clarity. Uber continuously collects safety data to improve services and collaborates with regulators to keep safety standards aligned with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) policies.
Partnership with Greenwheels Africa for electric motorcycles
In a move supporting sustainability alongside safety, Uber Boda partnered with Greenwheels Africa to introduce electric motorcycles into its fleet. These eco-friendly bikes reduce emissions and add reliability.
Greenwheels Africa CEO Nabil Anjarwalla said, “Combining our expertise in electric mobility with Uber’s technology allows us to deliver safer, cleaner, and more efficient transport.”
Drivers receive specialised training on maintaining electric motorcycles and meet regular inspection requirements. Riders witness a quieter, cleaner ride experience, boosting overall transport quality in urban areas. The partnership highlights a shift towards modern, responsible mobility solutions in Kenya’s booming boda boda industry.
By launching these safety and sustainability upgrades on Tuesday, Uber Boda is redefining motorcycle transport. Riders benefit from enhanced protection and transparency while contributing to cleaner cities. Uber’s professional standards also aim to improve the livelihoods of boda boda drivers through safer, more respected work conditions.
These improvements position Uber Boda as a leading safe and reliable motorcycle taxi option in Kenya’s fast-growing urban transport market.
