In AI’s early days, there were fears that AI innovation would take up jobs and render people jobless. However, the widespread adoption of AI in everyday work has proven to be the opposite.

People have realised that AI is here to stay, and instead of seeing it as a threat, they have started acknowledging it as a work assistant.

History has taught us that anytime an innovation is about to take centre stage, there are always initial fears and scepticism, but it always pays off in the long run.  Such is the case with AI.

With AI’s success so far, it is evident that AI is not here to take your job but to help you get a job, keep your job, and assist you with your work.

Here is how you can use AI to get a job:

Curriculum Vitae/Resume optimisation

Your CV or resume is your first point of contact as a job seeker. It will determine whether you get hired. Creating a compelling resume is paramount to getting your dream job.

With the help of AI, you don’t need to go through the stress or pay anyone to help you with your CV or resume. With any AI tool of your choice, you can generate your CV/resume by yourself.

All you need to do is input a prompt, and your details and your resume will be ready in seconds.

For instance, if you want to create a resume for a business developer, instead of writing, “create a professional summary for a business developer,” you should write, “create a 50-word professional summary for a business developer with 15 years of working experience in the agricultural industry.” This should also apply to other professions.

There are various AI-powered resumes or CV builders on the Internet that can help you automatically generate your resume. They include Enhancv, Teal, Rezi AI, Resume-Now, Kickresume and so on.

Skills enhancement

Learn skills that are relevant to your job role.

No modern-day employer would want to employ someone with little or no skills that will be helpful for the organisation’s growth. You need to hone your skills to get that high-demanding job you have always wanted.

With AI, you can equip yourself with additional skills that will make you stand out.

There are two types of skills – hard skills and soft skills. Both skills are essential for your career growth.

For instance, as a writer, complex skills that are relevant to your job include: ability to create engaging content, ability to write compelling stories that grab readers interest, ability to adapt to different writing styles to suit your different audience, ability to make research, SEO optimisation skills and so on, soft skills include effective time management to meet up with deadlines, creative thinking skills and communication skills. You must also learn to use digital tools such as Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.

As a graphics designer, learn about the principles of colour combination, how to illustrate a message with your design, and so on. Learn how to create a design that is suitable for your different audiences, this is where creative skill is highly needed.

For instance, if you want to design a graphic for a product or service for a Black community, you don’t have to use a white skin image, just as you will not use an adult’s photo for a product you are designing for children or a man’s image for a product you are planning for women.

As a digital marketer, communication is the most important skill you need to pass your message across to your audience. You must be able to communicate effectively, persuasively and convincingly. You also need networking skills to build relationships and partnerships.

Company’s info

AI can help you get information about the company you want to apply to. With the knowledge of the company, you have a 50 percent chance of landing the job.

As the saying goes, “Information is power.” You may not need to step out of your house to find out about the company. Just seek the help of AI, it will do the work for you, which may prepare you for your interview.

Equipping yourself with the company’s information through AI technology would prepare you well for the interview and give you a higher chance of being the interviewer’s choice.

Use AI to do extensive research for the company.

Interview preparation

AI can assist you to prepare well for your interview. This will help you to boost your confidence.

Ask AI the questions the company’s interviewer will likely ask you. You can even ask it to assist you with the answer.

However, it’s not advisable to entirely depend on the answer from AI. When going for the interview, just be natural, be yourself, and answer the interview questions with confidence.

Use AI to anticipate likely interview questions like “What do I say if the interviewer asks me where I see myself in the next five years?” and other questions like “How do I answer when asked ‘what are my areas of strength and weakness?’”

Job search

AI can help you to search for jobs in any area of your choice. Input the kind of job you want in any area of your choice and wait for the myriad of options that suit your preferences.

Self-employment:

If you don’t wish to work under anyone, you can also use AI to work for yourself. You can work as a graphic designer, video editor, blogger, content writer, web designer, and so on using AI-powered tools.

AI-powered tools such as AI Writer, ChatGPT, Content Blossom, WordLift, and Grammarly can assist you with writing.

AI-powered tools such as Adobe Sensei, Canva, Figma, Midjourney, and DALL-E can be used for graphic design.

AI-powered tools that can be used for video editing include Lumen5, Invidious, Raw Shorts Magisto, Wibbitz, Renderforest, etc.

Other AI-powered tools include Mobirise, Microsoft Expression Web, Google Web Designer, Wiz ADI, and Squarespace, which can be used to design websites. AI-powered tools such as Wix, WordPress, Weebly, and Blogger can be used for blogging.

Conclusively, one of the concerns of AI critics is that it will make people intellectually lazy. While I don’t share this thought, it is pertinent for us to use AI responsibly.

We should not depend wholly on AI to do all our work for us, as it also requires a touch of human intelligence.
