The Kenya Revenue Authority’s GavaConnect API portal has attracted over 1,000 developers in an unprecedented move for a Kenyan public sector platform.

“Today marks a great opportunity for us at KRA to open up to the wider tech community,” Annastacia Githuba, KRA’s Deputy Commissioner for Program Delivery & Client Engagement, declared at the agency’s latest API Masterclass.

For developers who participate, GavaConnect provides more than just a data dashboard. Software developers can now quickly check for compliance, connect directly to tax services, and even build brand-new fintech solutions on top of government rails thanks to Kenya’s first public API ecosystem.

GavaConnect’s API Suite Powers Innovation and Ease

Why does it matter? Developers never had such KRA access. The platform offers 16 APIs for PIN validation, Tax Compliance Certificate checks, NIL Return uploads, and quick e-Slip status, allowing developers to “build, innovate, and monetise solutions that make compliance simpler, faster, and more accessible.

”KRA’s Annastacia Githuba clarified: “This is not just about tax collection, it’s about creating opportunities for developers to improve services from the ground up.”

Many industry voices have echoed this enthusiasm, describing it as transformative for Kenya’s taxpayer experience.

Developer Masterclass Sparks New Ideas and Expansion Plans

The second API Masterclass acted as a developer bootcamp with live code walk-throughs, API demos, and a direct line for devs to suggest new features and provide feedback.

Grace Wandera, KRA’s Deputy Commissioner, Citizen Relations & Communication, shared, “Industry interest surpassed expectations. We are excited to see developers leveraging KRA’s digital infrastructure.”

Already expanding, GavaConnect will include APIs for eTIMS and VAT compliance. This momentum shows how KRA is “making government services accessible in ways that let people create solutions around them,” according to Githuba.

Developers can now onboard and build company tax integration tools quickly. Known tax-tech entrepreneurs have noticed.

Over 1,000 registrations indicate an energetic community determined to transform Kenyan tax and compliance. The early success of GavaConnect marks a new era in government-tech partnership.
