Moringa School has launched a ground-breaking national initiative to provide 3,600 Kenyan youths with free Artificial Intelligence (AI) training by December 2026.
This program, supported by a $2 million Google grant and implemented in collaboration with WeThinkCode in South Africa, is a component of a continental initiative to train 12,000 students in South Africa and Kenya.
To guarantee that young professionals acquire employable, future-ready skills for the changing labour market, Moringa is leading the rollout in Kenya by utilising its alum network, grassroots partnerships, and local knowledge.
The program’s goal
The program aims to upskill software engineers first, then move into essentials like healthcare and education.
More than just technical training, this program offers economic mobility, allowing Kenyan youth to become innovators rather than passive consumers and play a significant role in the AI-driven global economy.
Moringa is putting Kenya’s workforce in a position to succeed in fields increasingly influenced by cutting-edge technologies by guaranteeing access to inclusive, human-centred AI training.
Underrepresentation of Africa in AI technology
The launch coincides with a turning point in the global transformation of the healthcare, education, logistics, and creative industries due to artificial intelligence.
However, African countries are underrepresented in determining the direction of this technology since access to AI skills has remained primarily concentrated in the Global North.
By filling this gap, the project enables Kenya to assume a leading role in the responsible use of AI, preparing its workforce for future job prospects and developing technologies that will propel regional and continental advancement.
Nationwide recruitment campaign to enhance inclusivity
Moringa has launched a nationwide recruitment campaign aimed at women, underrepresented groups, and professionals from various backgrounds to guarantee inclusivity.
The program, which is expanding quickly with the help of academic institutions, tech hubs, and business executives, intends to develop a new generation of AI-savvy entrepreneurs capable of promoting long-term economic expansion.
This audacious move demonstrates Moringa’s dedication to national resilience and digital sovereignty, setting the stage for Kenya’s youth to spearhead Africa’s transition in the age of artificial intelligence.
WeThinkCode to train 12,000 Kenyans and South Africans with Google funding
Techpression reported in June that Google.org awarded $2 million to Wethinkcode, a South African computer academy, to deliver AI training to 12,000 students across South Africa and Kenya.
The free program aims to equip young people with essential artificial intelligence skills, preparing them for technical and non-technical careers in a rapidly evolving digital job market.
Thanks to this donation, WeThinkCode will significantly expand its AI training programmes in South Africa and Kenya.
