The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) announced on Thursday the increment of the Nigerian international passport.
The price of a 32-page, five-year Nigerian international passport has increased from N50,000 to N100,000.
The Service claims that a 64-page passport with a 10-year validity period will now cost N200,000, a 100% increase from the current N100,000 fee.
The raise is effective as of September 1, 2025.
Although the NIS stated that the increase was required to enhance the quality of the Nigerian passport, it should be noted that this only applies to applications submitted within Nigeria.
The Service announced the increase in a statement issued Thursday by AS Akinlabi, its Public Relations Officer.
The statement partly reads, “In a bid to uphold the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Passport, the Nigeria Immigration Service hereby announces an upward review of Nigerian Standard Passport fees, set to take effect on 1st September 2025.
The review, which only affects Passport Application fees made in Nigeria, now sets a new fee threshold of N100,000 for 32-page passports with 5-year validity and N200,000 for 64-page passports with 10-year validity.
“Meanwhile, Nigerian Passport Application fees made by Nigerians in diaspora remain unchanged at $150 for a 32-page passport with 5-year validity and $230 for a 64-page passport with 10-year validity.”
Second price increase in a single year
This was the second price increase in a single year. In August last year, the 32-page passport became N50,000 instead of N35,000 after the Service announced a price increase.
“As part of its efforts to maintain the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Standard Passport, the Federal Government has approved an upward review of the passport fees, effective September 1, 2024.
“Based on the review, a 32-page passport booklet with five-year validity previously charged at N35,000 will now be N50,000 only; while a 64-page passport booklet with 10-year validity, which was N70,000, will be N100,000,” the Service had said in its statement last year.
Significant progress in Nigeria’s passport system
Significant progress has been made in Nigeria’s passport system, especially under the direction of Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who in August 2023 ordered the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to process more than 200,000 pending passport applications in two weeks.
The NIS urged Nigerians to pick up their passports from the appropriate offices after announcing in October 2023 that it had successfully cleared this backlog.
The government’s larger attempt to expedite passport issuance and enhance accessibility was reflected in its announcement in May 2024 that home delivery of passports would start in June, removing the need for Nigerians to visit immigration courts.
In the meantime, the Henley Passport Index 2025 saw Nigeria’s passport achieve a better ranking this year, rising to its highest worldwide position in 11 years, ranking 88th out of 199 nations.
