The new e-visa platform, which is set to revolutionise travel to Somalia commencing September 1, 2025, is a bold move by Somalia.
This digital system replaces the traditional paper-based visa application process, enabling foreign visitors to apply online from anywhere globally.
The government guarantees that the platform will improve border security and transparency and simplify travel.
The platform is operated by the Somali Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA), which represents a significant advancement in Somalia’s compliance with international electronic visa standards.
Online application streamlines travel
The new electronic travel authorisation system (eTAS) and e-visa provide a unified, user-friendly portal for visa applications. Travellers can establish accounts, upload documents, and pay visa fees online, reducing wait times and eliminating the need for lengthy embassy visits.
According to ICA Director-General Mustafa Duhulow, “Somalia joins the world in adopting digital visa solutions. This platform will simplify travel, safeguard data, and strengthen the economy.”
The system supports growing visitor flows from trade, aid work, and the Somali diaspora’s family visits, making visa issuance faster and more reliable.
Strengthening border security and transparency
This e-visa platform mandates electronic vetting for most foreign nationals entering Somalia to improve security. Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, the Minister of Internal Security, underscores the importance of paying visa fees directly to government accounts through an online platform, which prevents misuse and enhances financial transparency.
Personnel who have received specialised training to oversee the system guarantee efficient and secure processing. Only holders of multiple-entry visas, diplomats, UNLP passport holders, inhabitants with permits, and citizens of countries with free-movement agreements are eligible for exemptions.
Somalia’s digital visa system indicates its preparedness to receive international travellers more securely and efficiently.
Somalia is transforming the East African travel landscape by modernising immigration services, which ensures the protection of national interests and data integrity and facilitates a more seamless travel experience.
