David Hodnett has been named the new chief executive officer (CEO) of Standard Bank of South Africa by the Standard Bank Group.

The seasoned banker oversees the group’s corporate affairs portfolio and acts as its chief risk officer (CRO).

David Hodnett’s portfolio

His new position at Standard Bank’s South African operations head will benefit from his extensive institutional knowledge and more than 30 years of leadership experience.

His prior positions included partner at KPMG, an auditing firm, and finance director for Absa Group and Absa Bank.

Hodnett is a chartered accountant with a Master of Business Administration from Manchester Business School and an advanced diploma in banking from the University of Johannesburg.

He was appointed after Kenny Fihla left his positions as deputy group CEO and CEO of Standard Bank earlier this year to assume leadership of Absa Group.

Thabani Ndwandwe becomes group Chief Risk Officer

Thabani Ndwandwe will replace Hodnett as the group CRO and join the Group Leadership Council.

Since 2004, Ndwandwe has worked for Standard Bank Group. The bank believes he is highly skilled at managing risk portfolios in various jurisdictions.

Furthermore, Lungisa Fuzile’s position as interim CEO of Africa Regions and Offshore has been made permanent.

David’s extensive experience in South Africa’s financial services sector

According to Sim Tshabalala, CEO of Standard Bank Group, these critical hires showed the depth of the bank’s leadership succession pipeline.

“David has extensive experience in South Africa’s financial services sector and has demonstrated exceptional leadership capabilities in our group,” said Tshabalala.

“Since joining Standard Bank two decades ago, Thabani has shown exemplary leadership across the risk portfolio, while Lungisa has a proven record of accomplishment.”

According to Standard Bank, the appointments were consistent with the company’s continuous commitment to delivering on its strategy and building strong internal leadership capabilities.

The regulatory approval process is still pending before Hodnett and Ndwandwe’s appointments take effect.
