Cointelegraph, a leading cryptocurrency media since 2013, has publicly announced a shift in its editorial policy.

In an open letter to the crypto industry published today on its website, the outlet revealed that it will move away from a purely neutral stance and adopt a policy of “Sceptical Advocacy.”

Under this new approach, Cointelegraph says it will maintain its commitment to journalistic scepticism while actively promoting blockchain technology’s values and long-term potential.

According to the outlet, the decision comes as a response to the ongoing trend of hostile and dismissive coverage of the crypto sector in mainstream media.

Cointelegraph sees digital assets as logical

They argue that digital assets are “logical, inevitable and useful,” yet traditional news organisations often portray them as “inherently scandalous and undesirable.”

“Our industry lacks a strong and competent media ally,” the open letter stated. “A publication willing to advocate for its promise, to defend its legitimacy and to challenge the narrative when it veers toward pessimism, sensationalism or misinformation. As of today, that’s our role.”

This new role will be guided by core values the outlet pledges to celebrate, including pragmatic decentralisation, personal sovereignty, and digital ownership rights. Cointelegraph says it will highlight projects and innovators that align with these principles.

However, the outlet quickly clarified that its advocacy is not unconditional. It promised to maintain rigorous scrutiny, vowing to “fiercely seek out and expose wrongdoing,” including conflicts of interest, predatory tokenomics, and outright scams.

“We believe in the transformative potential of this technology,” the letter explained, outlining the dual nature of its new stance. “But we also tire of seeing our industry painted in broad, dismissive strokes… It’s scepticism, but with support. Advocacy, but with accountability.”
