The opening of Africa’s first OpenAI Academy by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) is a historic event in Lagos.

This incident paves the way for Africa to become a creator in artificial intelligence rather than just a user of its tools.

The academy, unveiled during UNILAG’s International Week themed “Equitable Partnerships and the Future of AI in Africa,” promises to reshape Africa’s tech landscape by democratising AI learning.

OpenAI brings artificial intelligence skills directly to Africa

Unlike other IT initiatives, this institution takes a big step towards assuring fair AI knowledge access on the continent.

OpenAI Africa Lead Emmanuel Lubanzadio emphasised, “The goal is simple but bold: make sure everyone gets a fair shot at AI knowledge, and make sure Africa has a voice in where the technology goes next.”

During the two-day launch event on October 16 and 17, students, professionals, and researchers throughout Africa will have access to free AI learning resources and skill-building opportunities.

Lubanzadio characterised this partnership as a significant milestone in the democratisation of access to AI knowledge and Africa’s active engagement in the technology’s development.

UNILAG sets a new benchmark for AI education in Africa

By hosting this OpenAI Academy, UNILAG is positioning itself as the first African institution to partner with OpenAI on this level, marking a solid commitment to AI education. This partnership aligns with the university’s International Week focus on creating fair and balanced tech collaborations.

The academy will act as a platform to equip people across Africa with the know-how to lead and develop in AI applications, guaranteeing that the continent directly influences the direction of AI on a global scale. Instead of merely consuming foreign technologies, this project shows that Africa is prepared to contribute to designing its AI future.

In addition to establishing the first African AI academy of its type, this collaboration between UNILAG and OpenAI heralds a new age of AI access, ownership, and innovation on the continent.
