Gmail might soon allow email address changes: What you need to know

Google just unlocked a game-changing option for billions of Gmail users stuck with embarrassing old addresses from their school days. The tech giant now permits swapping a @gmail.com username for a fresh one, keeping every email, photo, and Drive file intact.

This shift ends years of forcing users to create new accounts and manually migrate their data.

Gmail address change keeps old emails flowing

Users access the Gmail address change through Google Account settings under Personal info and Email. The process transforms the original @gmail.com address into an alias, ensuring that messages sent to it are delivered to the same inbox. Both addresses are functional for accessing services such as YouTube, Maps, and Drive without interruption.

Google states on its support page: “If you’d like, you can change your Google Account email address that ends in gmail.com to a new email address that ends in gmail.com.”  Data such as emails, photos, and messages stays untouched after the switch. The old address remains reserved, blocking others from claiming it.

How Gmail address change restrictions apply

Google limits each account to three Gmail address changes total. After any swap, users wait 12 months before another Gmail address change or deletion. The new address must also end in @gmail.com; custom domains do not qualify.

This Gmail address change feature surfaced first on a Hindi support page, hinting at an India test before global rollout. English pages still show old rules stating that @gmail.com addresses “typically cannot be altered.” No full launch date exists yet.

Users check eligibility by visiting Manage your Google Account > Personal info > Google Account email. If the option appears, the Gmail address change activates immediately. For years, Outlook and Proton have offered identity swaps, prompting Google to follow suit.
