NCC Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Dr Aminu Maida stressed during the launch on Monday in Abuja that spectrum is an essential national resource supporting satellite communications, emergency networks, broadband services, mobile connectivity, financial platforms, and innovative technologies.
Plans to enhance communication services
Head of Spectrum Administration Atiku Lawal, speaking on behalf of the EVC, stated that the roadmap aims to provide a forward-looking framework that inspires investor confidence, promotes innovation, and ensures high-quality communication services nationwide.
“The initiatives are expected to stimulate broadband investment, expand digital infrastructure, create jobs, and strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy as the country positions itself to meet rising data demand and global competitiveness targets,” he added.
According to Lawal, effective spectrum planning will reduce the cost of broadband deployment, encourage network expansion into underserved areas, and create opportunities for companies that rely on digital connectivity.
He highlighted that the rapid demand for spectrum, driven by the Internet of Things, cloud services, artificial intelligence, and data-intensive applications, requires more intelligent planning and adaptable regulation.
Opening the lower 6 GHz and 60 GHz bands, according to the NCC, will increase capacity for high-speed, reasonably priced, and dependable connectivity, especially for Wi-Fi in public areas, businesses, schools, and homes.
“Expanded access to unlicensed spectrum will lower barriers to innovation, support new digital services, and enable SMEs to leverage affordable connectivity for growth,” Lawal said.
Closing the digital gap
Engr. Joseph Emeshili spoke on behalf of the Spectrum Administration Head. The roadmap is more than just a technical document, according to Joseph Emeshili, who called it a strategic plan to increase economic participation, close the digital divide, and provide dependable connectivity to all Nigerians, including those living in rural areas.
The full potential of Wi-Fi 6 will be enabled by the lower 6GHz band, he continued, while multi-gigabit wireless links for cutting-edge applications such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and smart cities will be supported by the 60GHz band.

According to Abraham Oshadami, spectrum planning is essential to achieving broadband goals, drawing in foreign investment, and maintaining Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global market.
He pointed out that increased spectrum access will enhance network quality, lower deployment costs, and hasten the shift to a digitally driven economy. He also noted that stakeholder input will strengthen the final policies.
The NCC claimed that its strategy supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s objective of creating a $1 trillion digital economy by 2030 and aligns with both national development priorities and the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
