The shutdown begins on March 1, 2026, ending sales and updates for individual users, while enterprise clients receive support until 2029. Adobe updated its support site and emailed customers on Monday to confirm the move, with no 2025 version ever released.

“Animate has been a product that has existed for over 25 years and has served its purpose well for creating, nurturing, and developing the animation ecosystem,” the company stated in its FAQ.

Users are now left scrambling, as Adobe has not provided a full replacement. Creative Cloud Pro subscribers will have to combine tools instead,  using After Effects’ Puppet tool for keyframe animation and Adobe Express for basic photo and video effects.

This shift to AI follows Adobe’s launch of Firefly subscriptions and generative tools in Photoshop, pushing older 2D animation tools into the background. The fact that Animate was not mentioned at Adobe Max last year had already hinted that it might be phased out.

Creators slam Adobe Animate AI focus

Animators and developers have taken to social media to express their anger, saying the software was essential for web games and online content. Many are urging Adobe to open-source Animate instead of shutting it down completely.

One Reddit user noted, “It’s challenging to identify a company that embodies the concept of enshitification more than this one,” capturing widespread backlash.

Another commented, “Whether we embrace it or not, I have a feeling that we are heading towards Adobe’s interpretation of the future, which likely involves animation driven by AI.”

Competition in AI is pushing Adobe to change direction, but many creators are questioning why the company would drop a paid tool. While existing downloads will still work without updates, professionals are calling for apparent alternatives. Some companies now have less than 30 days to switch to other tools.
