Scheduled to begin on May 6, 2026, the three-month programme combines advanced training, mentoring, and hands-on project work, requiring a weekly commitment of six to eight hours.

Building African-centred AI governance frameworks

At the heart of the AI Ethics & Governance Fellowship is a focus on developing governance frameworks that reflect local contexts. Participants will learn how to design systems that address ethical concerns, accountability, and fairness in AI deployment across sectors such as health, education, and governance.

The programme emphasises practical learning, enabling fellows to build policy tools, conduct audits, and design accountability systems for AI-driven technologies. Through a structured curriculum, participants will complete a capstone project to deliver real-world policy outcomes they can implement in their professional environments.

AI Ethics & Governance Fellowship opened for all Africans

The AI Ethics & Governance Fellowship is open to Nigerians and other Africans residing on the continent who demonstrate an interest in or experience with AI, digital policy, ethics, or technology regulation.

Applicants must have reliable internet access, basic digital literacy, and the ability to participate fully in a virtual learning environment.

The programme targets professionals in civil society, development organisations, public institutions, and the private sector. Technology practitioners, founders deploying AI solutions, and policy experts working on digital transformation are strongly encouraged to apply.

Women and young professionals are particularly encouraged, alongside individuals already influencing policy, research, or technology deployment.

Participants to receive training in AI ethics, others

Participants in the AI Ethics & Governance Fellowship will receive advanced training in AI ethics, governance, and policy development, guided by African and global experts. The programme also offers mentorship opportunities and access to a growing Pan-African network of AI policy leaders, fostering collaboration and peer learning.

Fellows who complete the programme will earn a certificate and join an alumni network designed to support continued engagement and professional growth.

The capstone project remains a central feature, allowing participants to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges and produce actionable governance solutions.

The fellowship is organised by Policy Innovation Centre (PIC), an institution focused on evidence-based policymaking across sectors, including health, agriculture, climate, and governance.

Through initiatives like the AI Ethics & Governance Fellowship, the organisation supports informed, ethical approaches to emerging technologies across Africa.
